Disassembly of Office Chair Casters
Admin October 10, 2026
The disassembly method for office chair casters should be selected based on the caster type. Here are the common types and steps:

1. Snap-ring (quick-release) Casters
These casters have an elastic metal snap ring at the top of the insert rod, and disassembly requires utilizing the deformation of the snap ring to remove it. Steps:
- Observe the wheel interface to confirm the snap-ring structure;
- Gently press the wheel vertically downward with your hand while pulling it outward to make the snap ring disengage from the metal sleeve of the chair leg;
- If it is difficult to operate by hand, insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver or an old key into the side gap of the wheel and press against the inner side of the snap ring to assist in loosening it.
2. Threaded (screw-post) Casters
These casters are fixed by threads, and the disassembly method is relatively simple. Steps:
- Simply rotate the wheel counterclockwise to unscrew it from the threaded hole in the base of the chair leg;
- If the threads are rusted, spray a lubricant (such as WD-40) to penetrate and then try again.
3. Direct-plug Casters
These casters rely on friction for fixation, and disassembly requires overcoming the resistance. Steps:
- Grasp the base of the wheel and pull it upward;
- If there is resistance, gently shake the wheel left and right to assist in disengaging it.
4. Snap-button Press Casters
These casters need to be unlocked by rotating the snap button. Steps:
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to press against the recess at the root of the axle core;
- Rotate it counterclockwise by about 30 degrees. After hearing a 'click' sound, pull the wheel outward.
5. Hidden Magnetic-fixation Casters
These casters are hidden and fixed by magnetism, and you need to locate the magnetic point to unlock them. Steps:
- Flip the chair over and look for a circular magnetic point with a diameter of about 2mm at the root of the wheel axle;
- Insert a metal tweezer into the magnetic point, rotate it by 90 degrees, and then pull out the wheel.
Auxiliary Tools and Precautions
- Lubrication: If the caster is rusted and stuck, spray a lubricant into the interface, wait for it to penetrate, and then use needle-nose pliers to clamp the root of the wheel axle, shake it left and right, and pull it outward.
- Safety Protection: It is recommended to wear cotton gloves during operation to prevent slipping and avoid scratching your hands when the metal snap buttons are tight.
- Prohibited Operations: Never disassemble the gas cylinder. Only flip the chair to operate on the caster part. The gas cylinder is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. Prying or heating it may cause gas leakage or even an explosion.
- Cleaning and Maintenance: After disassembly, use a cloth to clean the dust and debris in the installation hole of the chair leg to avoid affecting subsequent installation.
