Office Chair Caster Deviation

Admin October 12, 2026

If the casters of your office chair are misaligned, you can troubleshoot and fix the issue through the following steps:

1. Check the Caster Condition

Place the chair upright and upside down to observe whether the casters are level when they touch the ground. If you find that the caster legs are bent, deformed, or damaged, it will cause the chair to be unevenly stressed and tilt. In this case, you need to purchase new casters that match the original model for replacement. Most original casters are designed with a snap-on mechanism. Simply pull them straight up to remove them. When installing new casters, if you can't push them in by hand, you can gently tap them with a rubber mallet. Avoid using metal tools to prevent damage.

2. Check the Floor Levelness

If the casters are in good condition but the chair still tilts, you need to confirm whether the floor where the chair is placed is level. An uneven floor will force the casters to be at different heights, causing a tilting problem. You can use a level or observe the contact marks between the casters and the floor to judge the floor's levelness. If necessary, change the position of the chair or make simple repairs to the floor.

3. Check the Seat Panel Structure

If both the casters and the floor are normal, you need to check whether the seat panel is loose or deformed. When the connecting screws between the seat panel and the chair frame are loose, the seat panel will tilt due to uneven stress. In this case, tighten the screws. If the seat panel itself has dents or cracks due to long-term use, you need to replace it with a new one. When checking, press the edge of the seat panel with your hand and observe whether there is obvious shaking or abnormal noise.

4. Adjust the Height of the Gas Lift

Most office chairs allow you to adjust the seat height by rotating the knob on the gas lift. Lower the chair height until your feet can rest flat on the ground. When your center of gravity moves downward, the tendency of the chair to slide will be reduced. Some gas lift knobs have a "gravity lock" function. Turning them clockwise can fix the chair body and reduce the deviation caused by sliding.

5. Replace Appropriate Casters

Choose appropriate casters according to the floor material: For tile or marble floors, you can select nylon silent casters (a wheel hub diameter of more than 7.5cm is recommended). For wooden floors, you can choose PU brake casters. In winter, when the temperature is low, plastic casters become hard and slippery. It is advisable to replace them with PU casters. Appropriate casters can reduce the deviation problem caused by insufficient friction of the material.

6. Temporary Emergency Solutions

If the problem is urgent and cannot be fixed immediately, you can wrap 3-4 turns of electrical tape around the inner groove of the casters to increase friction. Or you can place books or yoga mats on the floor as temporary anti-slip areas. In an office environment, you can fold waste paper and place it under the casters. A thickness of about 5mm can effectively suppress sliding.
