Office Chair Caster Design
Office chair caster designs mainly include three types: universal casters, a combination of caster feet and adjustable fixed feet, and gravity self-locking (braked) universal casters. Here are the detailed introductions:

Universal Casters
Universal casters are a relatively common and basic type in office chair caster design. They can rotate freely 360ยฐ, enabling them to easily handle movement requirements in all directions. In daily office scenarios, an office chair equipped with universal casters allows the user to have a 'mobile workstation', greatly enhancing office flexibility and efficiency. For example, when needing to fetch files or communicate with colleagues, there is no need to frequently get up. Simply pushing the chair gently is enough to reach the destination. According to relevant research, this can reduce invalid getting-up times by 70%. High-quality universal casters adopt high-precision bearings and wear-resistant wheel surface designs, allowing for easy movement on different floor materials such as wooden floors, tiles, and carpets, providing a convenient user experience.
Combination of Caster Feet and Adjustable Fixed Feet
This design usually involves setting up multiple (e.g., 4 - 5) universal caster feet on the chair while equipping it with one or more adjustable fixed feet. When moving the chair, the fixed feet are raised, and the chair is supported by the casters, enabling easy sliding. When a fixed position is required, the fixed feet extend to touch the ground, providing stable support. At this time, although the casters are still in contact with the ground, the main load-bearing and anti-slip functions are undertaken by the fixed feet. The advantage of this design is that the stable and flexible modes can be actively and precisely controlled by the user. It is very reliable in situations where absolute stability is required, such as when performing detailed drawing work or needing to maintain body stability for writing. However, it also has some drawbacks. The structure is relatively complex, the manufacturing cost is high, and if the switching mechanism is of poor quality, it may malfunction or generate noise.
Gravity Self-Locking (Braked) Universal Casters
These casters have a built-in mechanical braking device. When the user sits down and the weight borne by the chair reaches a preset threshold (usually about 40 kilograms), the braking mechanism automatically locks under the action of gravity, preventing the wheels from rotating and making the chair stable. When the user stands up and the weight is removed, the brake automatically releases, and the chair can be easily pushed in any direction. This design achieves a fully automated experience of 'the chair becomes stable when the person sits and moves freely when the person stands up'. It is smooth to use, requires no additional operations, and has high safety, effectively preventing accidental sliding. However, it places high demands on the quality of the casters and the sensitivity of the load-bearing induction. Poor-quality products may have problems such as ineffective locking orไธ็ (smooth) release.
