Office Chair Caster Cleaning

Admin October 09, 2026

You can refer to the following methods for cleaning office chair casters:

Simple Cleaning Method

  • Dealing with Tangled Hair: First, use a very small pair of scissors to carefully handle the hair tangled around the wheels. This process is time-consuming and requires patience to avoid damaging the wheels.
  • Wiping the Wheels: Prepare a used facial cleansing cloth. Wet it and then let it air-dry partially. Use the textured side to wipe the wheels. Wrap the cloth around the wheels, secure it with a rubber band, sit on the chair, and move the chair back and forth. This will transfer the dirt on the wheels to the cloth. Repeat this process several times to complete the cleaning.

Three-Step Disassembly Cleaning Method

  • Disassembling the Casters: Turn the office chair upside down so that the seat faces downward. Be careful to protect the seat fabric. Hold the caster bracket with your hand and gently pull the caster outward. Most office chair casters are of a snap-fit design and do not require tools. If the caster is stuck tightly, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the edge of the snap-fit. Place a soft cloth underneath when prying to avoid scratching the bracket.
  • Removing Debris: Use tweezers to follow the rotation direction of the caster and pick out long hair strands and carpet fibers from the gaps of the caster one by one to prevent the hair from getting more tangled. Then, use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent to gently scrub the surface of the caster and the gaps in the bearings to remove residual dust and oil stains. Finally, rinse the caster with clean water. Be careful to keep the bearing part dry. Wipe off the water with a dry cloth and let it air-dry in a well-ventilated place for 10 minutes.
  • Lubricating and Reinstalling: After the caster is dry, drop 1 - 2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment at the bearing. Avoid using cooking oil to prevent it from attracting dust. Turn the caster by hand to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. Then, align the caster with the snap-fit on the bracket and gently push it in until you hear a "click" sound to confirm that the caster is firmly installed. Finally, turn the office chair back upright and push the chair to test whether the casters move smoothly. If there is still stuttering, check if there is any residual debris that has not been cleaned.

"Picking Debris โ†’ Brushing Dirt โ†’ Wiping Dry โ†’ Optional Disassembly and Repair" Step Method

  • Preparing Tools: Prepare an old toothbrush, toothpicks or small tweezers, a dry cloth, and a small amount of soapy water at home.
  • Cleaning the Gaps: Place the bottom of the office chair flat with the bottom facing up. Use a toothpick or small tweezers to reach into the gaps between the wheels and the bracket and pick out the hair, small pebbles, and fluff tangled there. If the mud in the gaps is hard, use a toothbrush dipped in soapy water to scrub back and forth. While scrubbing, use a dry cloth to wipe off the falling dirt to prevent the soapy water from seeping into the bearings of the wheels.
  • Wiping the Surface and Controlling Water: After cleaning the gaps, use a dry cloth to wipe the rubber surface of the wheels. If there is oil stains, you can use a diluted detergent solution to wipe it. Finally, use dry paper towels to absorb the residual water on the wheels and the bracket to prevent the metal parts from rusting.
  • Disassembling, Washing, and Maintaining Stuttering Wheels: If you feel stuttering when turning the wheels, you can try to remove the wheels from the bracket. Most of them can be removed by pulling them straight up. For those with snap-fits, gentlyๆŽฐ (this Chinese character means "pry" or "open") the snap-fit first. When disassembling, be careful not to lose the small plastic parts that fix the wheels. For the removed wheels, only use a dry cloth to wipe the bearing position. Never soak it in water. When reinstalling it on the bracket, hearing a "click" sound means it is firmly in place.
