Office Chair Caster Broken

Admin October 14, 2026

If the caster of your office chair is broken, you can replace it by following these steps:

I. Prepare Tools
Select tools based on the caster's fixing method: Snap-on casters usually do not require tools, but if the snap is too tight, prepare a flat-head screwdriver (with a soft cloth to prevent scratches) and a rubber mallet; screw-fixed casters require a screwdriver; if installation is difficult, prepare a spray lubricant (such as WD-40) or Vaseline.

II. Remove the Old Casters

  1. Snap-on Casters: Turn the chair upside down (with the seat facing down, taking care to protect the fabric), hold the caster bracket with your hand, and gently pull the caster in the opposite direction of the force core. If the snap is too tight, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to gently pry open the edge of the snap, avoiding scratches on the bracket.
  2. Screw-fixed Casters: Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and directly remove the casters.

III. Install New Casters

  1. Snap-on Installation: Align the new caster with the hole and forcefully insert it until you hear a 'click' sound, confirming it is securely installed.
  2. Other Installation Methods:
    • If installation is difficult, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) into the chair base socket or apply Vaseline to the wheel axle (pea-sized amount).
    • Use a rubber mallet to tap the caster into the socket, ensuring the rod aligns with the base. If it does not snap into place, gently push the caster and tap again until the rod is fully inserted.

IV. Test and Adjust

  1. Turn the chair back upright and sit on it to test if the wheels roll smoothly and evenly.
  2. If the wheel base does not slide smoothly, use a rubber mallet to gently tap the base to adjust its position.

V. Precautions

  1. Compatibility: If purchasing replacement casters separately is difficult, it is recommended to replace the entire set of casters. Contact the manufacturer with your chair model to order matching casters, or take the old casters to an office supply store to compare the shape and size of the wheel axles.
  2. Safe Operation: Avoid using excessive force during disassembly to prevent deformation of the bracket; be careful not to scratch your hands when using a screwdriver; keep lubricants away from fire sources.
  3. Maintenance Suggestions: Regularly clean hair and dust from the gaps between the wheels to extend the lifespan of the casters.

By following these steps, you can efficiently replace the casters of your office chair and restore its normal use.
