Office Chair Cannot Stay in Position

Admin October 13, 2026

If your office chair cannot stay in position, you can troubleshoot and resolve the issue using the following methods:

I. Check if the operation or adjustment is correct

  1. Handle operation: Most office chairs are equipped with a handle on the right side. Pushing it to the left locks the backrest angle, while pulling it to the right unlocks it. If the operation direction is incorrect, the backrest will not be able to be fixed. Adjust the handle position in the correct direction.
  2. Base knob adjustment: The cylindrical knob on the base is used to adjust the backrest's rebound support force. Turning it clockwise increases the support force, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. If the support force is too weak, the backrest may move backward due to pressure and fail to stay in position. Adjust the knob appropriately according to your weight and sitting posture.

II. Troubleshoot the wire control or pneumatic structure of special chairs If it is a reclining office chair, check the wire control switch:

  1. Wire control failure: If the wire control cannot close automatically, it may be loose, broken, or disengaged. Check the position of the wire control nut and adjust it to the appropriate tightness. If the wire control is damaged, replace it with a new one and reattach the terminals.
  2. Insufficient air pressure: Insufficient air pressure in the small gas cylinder will prevent the backrest from rebounding and staying in position after being pressed down. Replace the gas cylinder with one that meets the specifications to ensure normal air pressure support.

III. Check the tightness of connecting components

  1. Loose screws: The backrest and the seat body are fixed with screws. Long-term use may cause the screws to loosen. Tighten all connecting screws with an appropriate screwdriver to ensure structural stability.
  2. Damaged buckles: If the plastic part of the backrest buckle is broken or the metal part is deformed, the locking function will fail. Replace it with a buckle of the same model to restore the buckle's gripping function.

IV. Check the integrity of the support structure

  1. Backrest support rod: If the support rod is bent or broken, the backrest will tilt or sink. For minor bends, you can try to manually straighten it. For severe damage, replace the support rod.
  2. Deformed seat frame: A loose or deformed frame will prevent the backrest from aligning with the locking position. Check the frame connections, reinforce loose parts, and correct or replace deformed parts.

V. Lubricate moving joints If the moving joints (such as pivots and hinges) connecting the backrest and the seat lack lubrication, increased friction will cause the locking function to fail. Spray lubricating oil (such as WD-40) on the joints to reduce resistance.

VI. Seek professional repair If none of the above methods work, or if the chair has a complex structure (such as an electrically adjustable chair), it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair person. Forcing disassembly may cause further damage or safety hazards.
