Office Chair Cannot Recline
If an office chair cannot recline, it may be due to a locked function or issues with adjustment settings. You can troubleshoot and resolve the problem using the following methods:

1. Check and Unlock the Lock Button Some office chairs have a locking mechanism for the recline function. If this function is locked, the backrest will not recline. Locate the lock button (usually near the base of the chair, close to the five-star foot, or on the side of the chair), and try to pull it outward or move it in a specific direction to unlock it. After unlocking, slowly lean back against the backrest to see if the recline function is restored. If the button is in a concealed location, you may need to bend down to inspect the bottom structure of the chair or refer to the product manual to confirm its exact position.
2. Adjust the Backrest Control Handle The chair usually has a handle at the bottom for adjusting the backrest, and its function may vary depending on the design:
- Push-in Adjustment: Push the handle inward towards the chair. This may directly unlock the recline restriction or adjust the recline range. After pushing it in, try leaning back to test the effect.
- Press-and-hold Angle Adjustment: To adjust the recline angle, hold the handle down without releasing it while applying backward pressure with your back. The backrest will tilt according to the pressure applied. Once you reach the desired angle, release the handle to lock it in place. If the angle still cannot be adjusted, repeat this operation and increase the applied pressure.
3. Use the Recline Angle Adjustment Lever Some chairs have an independent adjustment lever at the rear underneath the seat for fixing the recline angle. To operate it, sit on the chair, and move the lever (usually by pulling it upward or downward) while applying slight backward pressure with your back. Once the backrest tilts to the target angle, release the lever to lock the angle. To return to an upright position, move the lever again and lean slightly forward. The backrest will automatically spring back due to the spring mechanism.
4. Adjust the Recline Resistance If the recline resistance of the chair does not match your body weight (e.g., if you are lightweight and find it difficult to recline, or if you are heavy and the chair suddenly drops when reclining), you need to adjust the recline resistance mechanism. This mechanism is usually located near the bottom of the chair, close to the gas lift, and may be a knob or lever:
- Heavy Body Weight: Set the resistance to a higher gear (rotate the knob clockwise or move the lever towards the โ+โ direction) to increase the recline resistance and prevent sudden drops.
- Light Body Weight: Set the resistance to a lower gear (rotate the knob counterclockwise or move the lever towards the โ-โ direction) to reduce the recline difficulty and make the operation easier.
If none of the above methods work, the internal mechanical components of the chair (such as springs or gas lifts) may be damaged. It is recommended to contact after-sales service for repair or replacement of parts. Avoid violent reclining during daily use and regularly inspect the locking mechanism and adjustment components to extend the lifespan of the chair.
