Office Chair Cannot Extend or Retract
The main reason why an office chair cannot extend or retract is often the failure of the gas lift cylinder, which can be resolved by checking the handle, increasing the travel, lubricating and cleaning, or replacing the gas lift cylinder.

Gas lift cylinder failure is the primary cause of an office chair's inability to extend or retract, accounting for over 90% of cases. Specific reasons include aging of the seal ring, nitrogen leakage, internal blockage, or locking caused by transportation collisions. In addition, secondary factors such as handle jamming, loose connectors, or damaged mechanical springs can also cause malfunctions. Here are specific troubleshooting and repair methods:
1. Check the Mechanical Connection of the Handle
Turn the seat upside down and observe whether the end of the control handle is aligned with the metal pin at the top of the gas lift cylinder. If there is misalignment, it indicates that the handle cannot effectively trigger the gas lift cylinder. Use a wrench to adjust the position of the base fixing screws to ensure that the end of the handle can accurately touch the pin. This step can eliminate mechanical misalignment issues caused by installation deviations or long-term use.
2. Increase the Trigger Travel
If the handle cannot touch the pin even when pressed all the way down, it may be due to excessive clearance caused by component wear. Hard spacers such as coins or plastic sheets can be attached above the pin to compensate for the worn clearance, allowing the handle to trigger the gas lift cylinder normally. This method is suitable for scenarios of mild wear or natural wear after long-term use.
3. Lubricate and Clean
Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin, press the handle repeatedly several times, and use the lubricant to remove internal impurities and restore the smooth rebound of the pin. If the gas lift cylinder is jammed due to blockage caused by dust or oil stains, this method can effectively solve the problem; if lubrication is still ineffective, further inspection of the internal state of the gas lift cylinder is required.
4. Replace the Gas Lift Cylinder
If the above methods are all ineffective, the gas lift cylinder needs to be replaced. When disassembling, turn the chair upside down on a stable surface and gently tap the connection between the bottom of the gas lift cylinder and the base, as well as the connection between the top and the seat cushion, with a rubber mallet to loosen them. When installing a new gas lift cylinder, ensure that it is inserted into the center hole of the base to the bottom, and then press the seat cushion vertically until a "click" sound is heard or it feels tightly fitted to complete the installation. When purchasing, pay attention to size compatibility, safety certifications (such as SGS, BIFMA), and load-bearing capacity. The price is usually in the tens of yuan.
Precautions: Before operation, confirm that the chair has no structural damage. It is recommended to wear gloves when replacing the gas lift cylinder to prevent scratches. If the chair is still under warranty, contact after-sales service first.
