Office Chair Cannot Descend

Admin October 12, 2026

There may be various reasons why an office chair cannot descend, and troubleshooting and solutions should be based on the specific situation. Here are some common causes and solutions:

1. Pneumatic rod issues The pneumatic rod is the core component that controls the chair's height adjustment. If it is damaged or leaks air, the function will fail. Diagnosis method: Press down on the seat with your hand. If there is no cushioning and you hear an air leak, or if there is severe stuttering during height adjustment, it may be due to air leakage or seal failure in the pneumatic rod. Solution:

  • Before replacing the pneumatic rod, ensure that the size and specifications match. Non-professionals are advised to contact after-sales service or a repair technician for operation, as self-replacement carries the risk of high-pressure gas explosion.
  • If you need to handle it yourself, first invert the chair and spray lubricant at the connections between the pneumatic rod and the seat and the five-star base. After allowing it to penetrate, use a rubber mallet to loosen any rust. When separating components, use a pipe wrench to grip the pneumatic rod and rotate it, or lightly tap the edges of the connectors to assist in disassembly. When installing a new pneumatic rod, ensure that the base is aligned with the seat, and sit on it to press and secure it firmly.
  • If the air leakage is caused by aging of the seal ring, you need to disassemble the chair to replace the seal ring. Be careful not to damage other components during operation.

2. Locking device failure Some chairs are equipped with a locking device to prevent accidental height adjustment. If the device gets stuck or is damaged, the chair may not be able to descend. Solution: Check if the chair is in the locked position. Try gently patting or shaking the locking part (such as the adjustment lever under the seat) to see if the height adjustment function can be restored. If the locking device is damaged, contact after-sales service for replacement.

3. Clogging due to dirt and foreign objects After long-term use, dust, lint, or oil stains may accumulate in the pneumatic rod, adjustment valve, and other parts, causing stuttering during height adjustment. Solution:

  • Use a vacuum cleaner or a soft cloth to clean the bottom of the chair, focusing on the pneumatic rod and the area around the height adjustment mechanism. Avoid using excessive water or cleaning agents.
  • Remove the seat bottom plate and check for oil leakage or foreign object blockage at the connection between the pneumatic rod and the adjustment valve. Use tweezers to remove lint, dust, etc.
  • If there is slight stuttering during height adjustment, apply a small amount of silicone-based grease to the exposed part of the pneumatic rod's telescopic rod to alleviate friction caused by rust or impurities.

4. Connection component issues Loose screws or bolts between the seat and the base may cause the height adjustment mechanism to shift. Solution: Check the connection parts under the seat and tighten all loose components with a wrench or screwdriver to ensure a stable structure.

5. User misoperation The height adjustment lever of some chairs is located on the right or left side under the seat, and it needs to be pulled up while sitting to adjust the height. Solution: Confirm whether you have mistakenly used the rotation adjustment knob as the height adjustment switch and try the correct operation method again.

6. Chair design flaws If none of the above methods work, it may be due to design or manufacturing flaws in the chair itself. Solution: Contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician for inspection and repair. Avoid disassembling it yourself to prevent further damage.
