Office Chair Cannot Be Raised
The core reason why an office chair cannot be raised or lowered is often the failure of the gas lift cylinder, which can be resolved through troubleshooting, replacement, or repair.

Gas lift cylinder failure is the primary reason for an office chair's inability to adjust in height, accounting for over 90% of cases. Specific causes include worn or aged seals leading to decreased airtightness, nitrogen leakage resulting in insufficient pressure, internal blockages from debris, or the cylinder being locked in the lowest position due to transportation impacts. Secondary causes include jammed or damaged control levers/knobs, loose or broken connections between the five-star base or chassis, and damaged mechanical springs.
Accurate troubleshooting involves three steps:
- Operational testing: Repeatedly press and rotate the height adjustment control button/lever to feel for any sticking or complete lack of resistance, indicating damage to the button mechanism;
- Sound assessment: When attempting to adjust the height, listen for any hissing air leaks or metallic friction sounds. A hissing sound suggests seal or nitrogen leakage, while friction sounds may indicate internal blockages or mechanical wear;
- Structural inspection: Check for any wobbling or unusual noises at the connection points between the chair base (five-star base) and the underside of the seat cushion. If the base is loose, it may be a connection issue; if the seat cushion wobbles, it is more likely a gas lift cylinder failure.
Steps for replacing the gas lift cylinder are as follows:
- Safe disassembly: Turn the chair upside down on a stable surface. If it can be raised, elevate it to the highest position. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the connection point between the bottom of the gas lift cylinder and the chassis, then tap the top connection point with the seat cushion to loosen the connections;
- Selecting a new cylinder: Choose a product labeled 'universal' that complies with the national GB/T 2280 standard and has a 'Level 4 certification'. Ensure the weight capacity rating matches your usage needs, with prices around a few dozen yuan;
- Installing the new cylinder: Insert the new gas lift cylinder into the center hole of the base until it reaches the bottom. Press down vertically on the seat cushion to ensure a tight fit with the top end of the gas lift cylinder. A clicking sound indicates successful installation.
Other repair methods:
- Adjusting the handle connection: Turn the seat upside down and check if the end of the handle touches the pin of the gas lift cylinder. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the fixing screws on the base;
- Compensating for wear gaps: If pressing the handle all the way down still does not reach the pin, attach a coin or plastic piece above the pin to increase the trigger travel;
- Lubrication and cleaning: Spray WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap around the pin and repeatedly press the handle until the pin rebounds smoothly.
Situations requiring immediate replacement of the gas lift cylinder: If the cylinder leaks oil, the chair slowly descends on its own after sitting, or cracks appear on the outer tube of the cylinder, it must be replaced with a new one to avoid safety hazards.
