Office Chair Cannot Be Raised or Lowered
The inability of an office chair to be raised or lowered is usually caused by a faulty gas lift cylinder, misaligned mechanical linkage, or a failed gas valve pin, and can be resolved through targeted repairs, but safety risks must be noted.

Faulty Gas Lift Cylinder
The gas lift cylinder is the core component for adjusting the height of an office chair. It is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas and maintains pressure through a seal. If nitrogen leakage or seal aging occurs, the gas lift cylinder will be unable to provide lift. In this case, the gas lift cylinder needs to be replaced, with prices ranging from 30 to 230 yuan, and can be purchased online and installed by oneself. Replacement Steps:
- Invert the chair and use your foot to hold the base steady.
- Shake the seat to loosen the gas lift cylinder from the base, and use a rubber mallet to tap the circular area around the gas lift cylinder to remove it.
- Insert the new gas lift cylinder into the base hole and ensure it is securely installed. Safety Tips: If the gas lift cylinder exhibits oil leakage, automatically and slowly descends after sitting, or cracks in the outer cylinder, it must be scrapped immediately to avoid explosion risks.
Misaligned Mechanical Linkage or Failed Gas Valve Pin
If the control handle detaches from the gas valve pin inside the base, or if excessive grease or dust accumulates in the base, it can obstruct the rebound of the pin, thereby affecting the height adjustment function. Solutions:
- Check Mechanical Connection: Invert the seat and adjust the fixing screws on the base so that the end of the handle touches the small metal dot (pin) at the top of the gas lift cylinder. If the handle cannot touch the pin even when fully pressed, a hard spacer (such as a coin or plastic piece) can be attached above the pin to compensate for the gap.
- Clean the Pin: Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin and repeatedly press the handle several times until the pin rebounds smoothly.
Repair Precautions
- Ensure the chair is stable before operating to avoid tipping over.
- When using a rubber mallet to tap the gas lift cylinder, avoid tapping the metal part directly to prevent deformation.
- If you are not familiar with the mechanical structure, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to avoid damage or safety hazards caused by improper operation.
By following the above steps, most office chair height adjustment failures can be resolved. If the problem persists, further inspection of the overall structure of the chair or contacting the manufacturer's after-sales service is required.
