Office Chair Cannot Be Raised
Admin October 17, 2026
The core reason why an office chair cannot be raised or lowered is often the failure of the gas lift cylinder, which can be resolved through troubleshooting, repair, or replacement.

I. Troubleshooting
- Operating Control Components: Repeatedly press and rotate the lift button/lever to feel for any sticking or complete lack of resistance. If there is an abnormality, it may indicate damage to the button mechanism or a loose connection.
- Listening for Faults: When attempting to raise or lower the chair, pay attention to any hissing air leaks or metal friction sounds. A hissing sound suggests nitrogen leakage or aging of the seal ring; a friction sound may be caused by internal debris blockage or wear of mechanical components.
- Checking Mechanical Structure: Observe the connection between the chair base (five-star foot) and the seat cushion for any wobbling or unusual noises. If the base is loose, it may be due to a broken connector or unscrewed screws; if there is no obvious wobbling, the fault is more likely concentrated in the gas lift cylinder.
II. Targeted Repairs
- Adjusting Handle Connection: Invert the seat and check if the end of the control handle accurately touches the metal pin at the top of the gas lift cylinder. If misaligned, use a wrench to adjust the position of the base fixing screws to ensure the handle aligns with the pin.
- Compensating for Wear Gap: If pressing the handle to the bottom still fails to trigger the pin, you can stick a hard spacer such as a coin or plastic sheet above the pin to compensate for the gap caused by long-term use.
- Lubricating and Cleaning: Spray a small amount of WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin and repeatedly press the handle several times until the pin rebounds smoothly. This method can resolve sticking caused by dust or rust.
III. Replacing the Gas Lift Cylinder
If the above methods are ineffective, the gas lift cylinder needs to be replaced:
- Safe Disassembly:
- Invert the chair on a stable surface and raise it to the highest position for easier operation.
- Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the connection between the bottom of the gas lift cylinder and the chassis, applying even force to loosen them; then tap the top connection with the seat cushion. For older chairs with tight connections, increase the force and be patient.
- Purchasing a New Part:
- Search for 'computer chair gas lift cylinder' on e-commerce platforms and choose a product labeled 'universal'. Confirm size compatibility with customer service before purchasing.
- Prioritize products that comply with the national GB/T 2280 standard and have a 'Level 4 Certification' mark to ensure safety; choose a load-bearing grade according to your weight (e.g., standard model for under 100kg). Prices are usually in the tens of yuan.
- Installing the New Cylinder:
- Insert the new gas lift cylinder into the center hole of the base, ensuring it goes all the way in; align the seat cushion with the top of the cylinder and press down vertically until you hear a 'click' sound or feel a tight fit. You can also step on the base and shake the cylinder to assist with installation.
