Office Chair Cannot Be Locked

Admin October 09, 2026

If an office chair cannot be locked, you can try the following solutions:

Adjust the locking mechanism: First, locate the handle on the right side of the office chair. Push it in to the left to lock the chair and pull it out to the right to unlock it. If the locking force is not appropriate, adjust the cylindrical knob on the base. Rotating it clockwise increases the rebound support force, while rotating it counterclockwise decreases it. Adjust it to find the proper locking state.

Check the wired control switch: For office chairs that can recline flat, the automatic closure of the wired control switch is a prerequisite for normal locking. If it cannot close automatically, the wired control may be loose, broken, or disengaged. In this case, reattach the terminal of the wired control to restore its function.

Check the seat height locking mechanism: Operate the locking mechanism correctly according to the chair's instruction manual. If you hear a 'click' sound but the chair still won't lock, the locking mechanism may be damaged or operated incorrectly. In this situation, it is advisable to contact after-sales service for repair, and have a professional inspect and fix it.

Check the structure of the locking device: Observe the locking device on the backrest of the office chair to see if any parts are damaged or loose. If the locking button is damaged, purchase a button of the same model for replacement. If the screws at the connection points are loose, use an appropriate screwdriver to tighten them.

Clean the movable joints: The movable joints of the backrest are prone to accumulating dust, debris, etc. These foreign objects can hinder the locking function. Carefully clean the joints to remove all visible foreign matter, allowing the backrest to move freely.

Check the elastic components: Elastic components such as springs play an important role in the locking process. If the spring loses its elasticity, it may not be able to provide enough force to lock the backrest. Carefully inspect the spring. If a problem is found, purchase a compatible spring for replacement.

Perform lubrication: Some office chair locking mechanisms require lubrication to maintain good working condition. Apply an appropriate amount of lubricating oil to key parts, such as the contact points between the locking button and the slot, and the movable joints. After lubrication, operate the backrest locking several times to allow the lubricating oil to take full effect.

Check for loose connections: If the chair wobbles slightly after locking, check all the screws and bolts at the connections between the seat bottom and the base, and between the armrests and the seat. Use a screwdriver to tighten them one by one.

Check the locking handle or lever: If the chair cannot be locked at all or automatically springs back, first check if the locking handle or lever is fully returned to its position. Sometimes the mechanism may get stuck. Try operating it several times to ensure smooth movement.

Check the metal buckles of the locking device: Observe the metal buckles and other parts of the locking device to see if there are any foreign objects stuck or obvious deformation and damage.

Check the gas lift cylinder: For chairs that use a gas lift cylinder, if there is a slow sinking or inability to lock, the seal of the gas lift cylinder may have deteriorated. You can buy a new gas cylinder online, following the model number on the original one, and replace it.
