Office Chair Cannot Be Adjusted in Height

Admin October 10, 2026

The main reason an office chair cannot be adjusted in height is a malfunctioning gas lift cylinder, which can be resolved through troubleshooting, replacement, or physical resetting.

A malfunctioning gas lift cylinder is the core reason for an office chair's inability to adjust in height, accounting for over 90% of cases. It can be categorized into three types of internal failures:

  1. Seal Ring Aging: When the internal seal ring of the gas lift cylinder wears out or ages, airtightness decreases, and internal pressure cannot be maintained, resulting in an inability to support body weight or automatic lowering.
  2. Nitrogen Leakage: The gas lift cylinder relies on nitrogen to provide pressure. If the seal fails and nitrogen leaks, insufficient pressure will directly cause the lifting mechanism to fail.
  3. Impurity Blockage: Impurities mixed in during transportation or use may block the internal channels of the gas lift cylinder, hindering pressure transmission and causing stuttering or complete failure.
Additionally, new chairs may have the gas lift cylinder locked at the lowest position due to transportation impacts; secondary causes such as a stuck control lever, loose connections at the five-star base, or damaged mechanical springs also need to be checked.

Maintenance Steps are as follows:

  1. Precise Fault Troubleshooting:

    • Repeatedly press the lifting control button/lever to feel for any stuttering or lack of resistance; listen for a hissing air leak or metal friction sound while adjusting the height.
    • Check for any wobbling or unusual noises at the connection between the five-star base and the seat cushion to confirm if pressure transmission failure is due to loose connections.
  2. Safely Remove the Old Gas Lift Cylinder:

    • Place the chair upside down on a stable surface; if it can barely rise, elevate it to the highest position.
    • Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the connection between the bottom of the gas lift cylinder and the chassis, then tap the top connection with the seat cushion to loosen it through vibration.
  3. Select and Replace with a New Gas Lift Cylinder:

    • Search for "computer chair gas lift cylinder" on e-commerce platforms and choose a product with universal size, safety certification (such as SGS, BIFMA), and a matching weight capacity (priced around a few dozen yuan).
    • Insert the new gas lift cylinder into the center hole of the base until it reaches the bottom, align it with the top of the seat cushion, and press down vertically until you hear a "click" sound or feel a tight fit, indicating installation is complete.

Physical Resetting Method (for mechanical failures):

  1. Check Handle Connection: Turn the seat upside down to confirm if the end of the control handle can touch the pin at the top of the gas lift cylinder; if misaligned, adjust the fixing screws on the base with a wrench.
  2. Increase Trigger Travel: If the handle cannot touch the pin even when pressed all the way down, stick a coin or plastic piece above the pin to compensate for wear gaps.
  3. Lubricate and Clean: Spray WD-40 or sewing machine oil into the gap of the pin and repeatedly press the handle until the pin rebounds smoothly.

Situations Requiring Immediate Replacement: If the gas lift cylinder leaks oil, automatically lowers slowly after sitting, or has cracks on the outer cylinder, it must be replaced with a new one to avoid safety hazards.
