Office Chair Can Sway

Admin October 13, 2026

The swaying of an office chair can be caused by various factors, and corresponding measures can be taken for different swaying situations.

Reasons for the Overall Swaying of an Office Chair

  • Swivel Base Design: Computer chairs are usually equipped with a swivel base. This design feature makes the chair prone to swaying left and right when subjected to slight external forces. This is to meet the need for users to flexibly rotate their bodies during office work, but it also brings about swaying issues to a certain extent.
  • Material Elasticity Impact: The base and frame of a computer chair are made of materials with a certain degree of elasticity. When subjected to external forces, they will deform and cause swaying. For example, some plastic or metal materials will undergo tiny elastic deformations when stressed, thus causing the chair to sway.
  • Structural Stability Issues: If the connecting components are loose, the screws are not tightened, or the structural design is unreasonable and the assembly is not firm, the stability will be reduced, making the chair prone to swaying. For instance, if the screws at the connection between the chair legs and the base are loose, the chair will sway during use.
  • Long-term Use Wear and Tear: Wear and tear caused by long-term use, such as wear on key components like the base and bearings, will also make the chair sway more noticeably. As the usage time increases, the surfaces of these components will gradually wear out, leading to an increase in the clearance between them and thus affecting the stability of the chair.

Methods for Fixing a Swaying Office Chair Backrest

  • Check and Tighten the Screws: First, check whether the screws at the connection between the backrest and the seat are loose. If they are, use a screwdriver to tighten them. If the screws are stripped or damaged, replace them with new ones to ensure a firm connection.
  • Increase Friction: Add rubber gaskets or other materials at the connection to increase the friction between the backrest and the seat and reduce swaying.
  • Use Strong Adhesive: Apply strong adhesive to the connection gaps to enhance the stability of the connection. However, be sure to choose an appropriate adhesive to avoid damaging the chair.
  • Repair the Internal Support Structure: If the swaying of the backrest is due to problems with the internal support structure, disassemble the backrest to check for loose or broken components and repair or replace them.
  • Temporary Stabilization Measures: Wrap the backrest and the main body of the seat with ropes or cloth strips to provide temporary stabilization. However, this is just an emergency measure, and more thorough repairs are required for long-term use.
