Office Chair Cable Adjustment

Admin October 11, 2026

The issue of the 'cable becoming longer' in office chair cable adjustment usually occurs due to the loosening of the steel wire rope or the loosening of the fixed end, resulting in the backrest not locking tightly, weak adjustment, or inability to return to its original position. This can be troubleshot and adjusted through the following steps:

1. Locate the operating end and confirm whether the adjustment function is normal
First, find the button, toggle, or tongue handle that controls the backrest. Operate it repeatedly and feel for any 'clicking' sounds or changes in resistance. If there is no clear feedback during operation, it may be that the connection between the inner core steel wire rope and the locking device has failed, or the steel wire rope has become severely loose. In this case, further inspection of the cable status is required to avoid masking underlying problems due to operating-end failures.

2. Check the fixation of the cable housing
The two ends of the cable control protective sleeve (spiral metal housing) are key inspection points:

  • Connection point between the seat bottom and the chassis: If the housing is loose, the effective travel of the inner core steel wire rope will be shortened, resulting in insufficient stretching of the steel wire rope during adjustment and the appearance of a 'lengthening' illusion.
  • Near the backrest pivot: Loose housing fixation here will directly affect the stability of the backrest angle locking.
Handling method: Use tools to re-tighten the fixing screws or clips at both ends of the housing to ensure a tight connection between the housing and the chair body, restoring the normal travel of the inner core steel wire rope.

3. Attempt a simple reset operation
For some externally exposed cable control structures (such as when the end of the cable is accessible), while operating the adjustment button, gently assist in pulling or pushing the steel wire rope to help it return to its initial state. This method is suitable for cases where the steel wire rope is slightly stuck or has difficulty returning to its position, but care should be taken to avoid applying excessive force that could cause the steel wire rope to break.

4. Distinguish faults in other adjustment mechanisms
If cable adjustment is ineffective, other mechanism problems need to be considered:

  • Mechanical angle adjuster: It fixes the backrest angle through a locking gear mechanism. The fault may stem from gear wear or spring failure, requiring replacement of the angle adjuster assembly.
  • Gas spring adjustment: Common in executive chairs with a rocking function. If the seat lifting or reclining function is abnormal, it may be due to gas leakage in the gas spring itself, deformation of the linkage rod, or a stuck locking valve, requiring professional repair or replacement of the gas spring.

5. Scenario expansion and precautions
The core functions of office chair cable adjustment are backrest angle adjustment and seat lifting. Seat cables in scenarios such as cars, theaters, and airplanes may involve more functions (such as headrest adjustment and leg rest extension), but the principles are similar. In daily use, avoiding violent adjustment or prolonged use at the maximum angle can delay the loosening of the steel wire rope and mechanical wear. If the problem is not resolved after adjustment, it is recommended to contact after-sales service or professional repair personnel to avoid further damage caused by self-disassembly.
