Welding for Broken Office Chairs

Admin October 10, 2026

Whether a broken office chair can be repaired by welding depends on the material and the extent of the damage, and cannot be generalized. Here is a detailed analysis:

For plastic materials, such as ABS plastic, nylon plastic, or aluminum alloy (some plastic chair legs may contain aluminum alloy frames), welding repair is not an ideal solution. Welding of plastics requires heat melting or chemical solvents, but the welded areas are prone to cracking again after long-term use due to material aging and stress concentration, posing safety risks. For example, if the load-bearing part of a chair leg breaks due to poor welding, it may cause the user to fall. It is recommended to directly replace the leg; market prices usually range from a few dozen to over a hundred yuan, which is relatively low-cost and offers higher safety.

For metal materials, the repair method should be selected based on the extent of the damage:

  1. Small-area open welds: Metal AB glue can be used for adhesive repair. The operation steps include:

    • Surface preparation: Sand the open weld area to remove the oxide layer and oil stains, ensuring a clean bonding surface;
    • Mixing the glue: Prepare the metal AB glue according to the ratio (usually 1:1) and stir well;
    • Applying the adhesive: Apply the glue evenly to the open weld area and press firmly for 5-10 minutes;
    • Curing: Allow the glue to cure completely at room temperature for 24 hours;
    • Sanding smooth: Sand any excess glue to make the surface smooth.
      After curing, the bonding strength is close to that of welding, and the operation is simple, requiring no professional equipment.
  2. Large-area open welds or damage to load-bearing parts:

    • Angle iron reinforcement: Cover the open weld area with an angle iron (L-shaped metal piece) and secure it with screws to distribute the load-bearing pressure and enhance structural stability;
    • TIG welding repair: If the damaged part has a simple structure (such as a straight open weld), it can be welded by a professional using TIG welding, which can be completed in less than 5 minutes by a skilled operator. TIG welding protects the weld with an inert gas to prevent oxidation and offers high welding strength, but it is important to sand and rust-proof the weld afterward.

Summary: For plastic office chairs, it is recommended to replace damaged parts. For metal chairs, adhesive repair, reinforcement, or welding can be chosen based on the extent of the damage. Before repairing, assess the safety; if it involves load-bearing structures, prioritize professional repair or replacement to avoid accidents caused by improper repair.
