Office Chair Broken

Admin October 08, 2026

When an office chair is broken, targeted solutions can be adopted according to different fault conditions. Here are some common problems and their handling methods:

Chair Leans to One Side

First, check if the wheels are uneven when the chair is placed upright and upside down, and look for any signs of damage on each wheel foot. If the wheel foot is bent or deformed, the chair will lean in that direction. After identifying a damaged wheel, purchase a new set of matching wheels for replacement. You can contact the manufacturer with the chair model for ordering or take one of the old wheels to an office supplies store to find a matching replacement set, paying attention to matching the shape and size of the wheel axle. When removing the casters, hold the caster wheel with one hand and the bottom of the chair with the other hand and pull hard. If it doesn't come out, insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the small gap between the wheel foot and the chair as a lever. If the caster is fixed with screws, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove it. Apply a small amount of spray lubricant (such as WD - 40) to each socket on the chair base. If you don't have any, apply a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly to each wheel axle. Use a rubber mallet to tap each caster into its socket on the chair. Turn the chair upside down to test the new wheels. If it still leans, continue to check if the seat plate is damaged.

Office Chair Makes Strange Noises, Jams, or Even Stops Working

  • Height Adjustment Jamming/Strange Noises: When adjusting the height, it makes a creaking sound or even gets stuck. The gas lift rod itself cannot be lubricated. Focus on treating the metal friction surface at the connection between the base and the gas lift rod.
  • Inflexible Rotation: When rotating the seat, it requires effort or even makes a friction sound. Apply white lithium grease (recommended viscosity grade NLGI 2) to the track of theๅบ•็›˜่ฝฌ็›˜ (base turntable, here it is kept in Chinese as it might be a specific term; if there's a more accurate English equivalent, it can be replaced) .
  • Loose Armrests/Difficult Adjustment: The internal rack of the armrest height adjustment buckle needs to be disassembled and coated with a trace of lubricating grease.
  • Backrest Rebound Failure: The plastic gear set of the synchronous backrest needs to be lubricated with food-grade grease (avoid contact with clothing).
  • Poor Roller Rolling: Every year, use a cotton swab to apply lubricating grease to the wheel axles (be sure to clear any tangled hair first).

Office Chair Recline Failure

It may be that the chair's function is locked. Find the relevant button, pull it outwards, and then lean the backrest back.

Cracked Backrest Wooden Board of the Chair

If the wooden board of the chair's backrest is cracked and cannot be used due to prolonged leaning, consider replacing only the upper half.
