Office Chair Broken Leg Modification

Admin October 17, 2026

There are mainly three methods for modifying an office chair with a broken leg: alternative support, replacing the casters, and replacing the five-star base.

Alternative Support Solution

If professional repair is not immediately available after an office chair leg breaks, an alternative support solution can be adopted. Items such as dictionaries or wooden blocks can be used to elevate the other three chair legs, maintaining basic balance. Alternatively, the broken leg can be replaced with a PVC pipe or a mop handle wooden stick. First, cut the PVC pipe or mop handle wooden stick to the same height as the original chair leg, then secure it in place with self-tapping screws. However, this modification method has certain limitations; the modified chair may exhibit slight wobbling and is only suitable for temporary use. During use, regularly check for signs of cracking at the connections, recommended weekly, and avoid single-leg loads exceeding 15kg for three months after repair to prevent further damage.

Replacing Damaged Casters

If the issue with the office chair leg is merely a non-rotating, damaged, or detached caster, this is a relatively simple repair scenario. First, identify the type of caster, commonly threaded or push-in. For threaded casters, use your hands or tools like pliers or screwdrivers to rotate the caster counterclockwise and unscrew it. For push-in casters, grasp the caster firmly with both hands, press down while rotating left and right to pull it out. When installing new casters, ensure the model, size, and load capacity match the old ones. For threaded casters, screw them in clockwise and tighten; for push-in casters, insert them vertically with force until a "click" sound is heard, indicating the spring clip is securely in place.

Replacing the Entire Five-Star Base

When the five-star base itself is cracked, severely deformed, or detached from the central column, the most reliable solution is a complete replacement. First, lay the chair on its side or gently invert it onto a soft pad to protect the chair and floor. Then, observe the connection method between the center of the five-star base and the bottom of the gas lift (central column), commonly either a flat washer spring clip fixation or a conical press fit. If it's a flat washer spring clip fixation, locate and remove the spring clip to extract the five-star base. If it's a conical press fit, gently tap the connection with a rubber mallet to loosen it before removal. Finally, purchase a matching new five-star base for installation.
