Office Chair Breakage Repair
Admin October 09, 2026
When an office chair breaks apart, you can first determine whether it is worth repairing and then choose an appropriate repair method based on the cause. Details are as follows:

Determining Whether It Is Worth Repairing
- Economic Value: If the chair is made of ordinary materials such as pine or beech, the repair cost may far exceed its intrinsic value, making repair not cost-effective. However, if the chair is crafted from precious woods like rosewood or mahogany, or features special craftsmanship, is in good condition, and is of significant age, possessing high collection value, then repair is worthwhile.
- Emotional Value: If the chair carries family memories or personal sentimental value, even if its economic value is low, repairing its functionality holds unique significance.
Understanding the Cause of Breakage
- Wood Characteristics: Traditional solid wood office chairs, especially those with mortise-and-tenon joints, may experience wood shrinkage in dry air, leading to increased gaps between the tenon and mortise, resulting in looseness or breakage. Natural aging of the wood and prolonged use can also reduce its strength and toughness, making such issues more likely.
- Improper Use: Overloading, rough handling, or accidental impacts can damage the chair, causing it to break apart.
- Manufacturing Process: Some chairs use staples and glue instead of mortise-and-tenon joints. When the staples rust and the glue ages, the chair becomes prone to breakage.
- Insect Damage: Insect infestation can destroy the internal structure of the wood, leading to chair breakage.
Repair Methods
- Glue Repair Method: Both woodworking glue and white glue are suitable. First, align the broken parts, evenly apply glue to the seams, then use clamps or ropes to press and secure them. Once the glue is completely dry, the chair will become stable.
- Screw Fixing Method: If breakage is caused by loose or missing screws, locate the loose or missing screw holes and use a screwdriver to insert screws. If the screw holes are worn, fill them with wooden plugs or sawdust before inserting screws.
- Metal Corner Brace Method: Select a metal corner brace of an appropriate size, install it on the broken part, and then secure it with screws. This can increase the chair's stability and enhance its load-bearing capacity.
If you are unsure how to repair the chair, it is best to seek help from a professional furniture repair technician. During the repair process, use appropriate tools and personal protective equipment.
