Wood Types for Office Chair Bottoms

Admin October 09, 2026

The commonly used wood types for the bottoms of office chairs are not clearly defined, but three unsuitable materials—low-quality pine, plywood, and poplar—can be excluded.

In the production of office chairs, there is currently no unified and clear standard for the type of wood used at the bottom. However, by considering the types of wood that should be avoided in chair production, some possible scenarios can be inferred.

Firstly, low-quality pine is unsuitable for the bottoms of office chairs. Low-quality pine has a low density, making it prone to deformation and cracking under weight. Moreover, low-quality pine may emit a pungent odor, which not only affects the user experience but may also pose certain health risks.

Secondly, plywood is also not recommended as a material for the bottoms of office chairs. Plywood may use a large amount of glue during production, leading to the risk of excessive formaldehyde levels. Formaldehyde is a harmful gas, and long-term exposure can have adverse effects on human health. Additionally, plywood is susceptible to moisture, easily expanding and deforming in humid environments, resulting in poor stability and an inability to guarantee the long-term quality of the office chair.

Furthermore, poplar is similarly unsuitable for the bottoms of office chairs. Poplar has a relatively soft texture and poor moisture resistance, making it prone to dampness and mold in humid environments. Moreover, the grain of poplar is relatively rough, lacking in aesthetic appeal, which may affect the overall appearance of the office chair.

Although some office chairs may use solid wood materials, for example, Ningjin County, known as the "Hometown of Chinese Solid Wood Furniture," has enterprises producing solid wood dining tables and chairs (including chairs) using CNC equipment for processing. However, it is not explicitly stated whether these solid wood materials are used for the bottoms of office chairs. Therefore, when choosing an office chair, consumers need to pay attention to the materials used at the bottom and avoid selecting office chairs that use the aforementioned unsuitable materials to ensure the quality and user experience of the office chair.
