Office Chair Bottom Height Increase

Admin October 19, 2026

There are mainly the following methods to increase the height of the bottom of an office chair:

I. Adjust the Chair's Own Structure

  1. Height Adjustment of Pneumatic Office Chairs
Locate the height adjustment handle beneath the seat. Move away from the chair or slightly lift your body off the seat surface. Pull the handle upwards while gently lifting the seat cushion with both hands to utilize the elasticity of the pneumatic rod for elevation. Release the handle, and it will automatically lock the height. If you are relatively light in weight, you can stand and directly pull the seat cushion upwards with your hands while pulling the handle to assist in elevation.

  2. Height Adjustment of Screw-Type Office Chairs
These chairs have a knob at the bottom of the pneumatic rod or support rod. Turn the knob counterclockwise, and the seat will gradually rise. After adjusting to the appropriate height, turn the knob clockwise to tighten and secure it.

II. Use External Height-Increasing Accessories

  1. Height-Increasing Foot Pads

    • Plastic/Rubber Foot Pads: Simply slip them over the existing chair legs. They are suitable for a slight height increase (2 - 5 centimeters), are cost-effective, and easy to install.
    • Wooden/Metal Blocks: They offer greater stability and are suitable for scenarios requiring a higher height increase (such as over 10 centimeters). However, attention should be paid to balance.
    • Specialized Furniture Height-Increasing Pads or Foot Pads: Usually made of non-slip and wear-resistant rubber, plastic, or metal materials, with suction cups or non-slip textures designed at the bottom. They can effectively elevate the chair height and maintain stability. Common height-increasing pads can elevate the height by 2 to 5 centimeters, and some products can even achieve an elevation range of 8 to 12 centimeters. Installation is mostly tool-free and suitable for most wooden chairs and iron-framed chairs.
  2. Replace Height-Adjustable Components

    • Pneumatic Rod Extension Bars: Suitable for computer chairs, they need to match the original chair model and can increase the height by 5 - 15 centimeters. It is recommended to have them installed by a professional.
    • Height-Adjustable Chair Columns: Some office chairs support the replacement of extended chair columns. Compatibility of the interface needs to be confirmed.
    • Replace Extended Pneumatic Rods: If the original pneumatic rod is damaged or has insufficient travel, you can purchase an extended pneumatic rod of the same model. Confirm the diameter and length of the pneumatic rod, disassemble the base, and replace it. Tools are required, and safety precautions should be taken.

III. Other Auxiliary Methods

  1. Thickened Seat Cushions
Memory foam or high-density sponge cushions can indirectly elevate the sitting height (3 - 8 centimeters) and are suitable for temporary adjustments.

  2. DIY Modifications
For example, using wooden boards to elevate the base. However, ensure that the structure is stable to avoid the risk of tipping over.

Precautions: If the chair cannot be elevated using the above methods, it may be due to air leakage in the pneumatic rod, a stuck handle, or a rusty knob. You can first spray lubricant on the adjustment components and repeatedly pull the handle to try. If it still doesn't work, it is recommended to contact a professional repair person to replace the components. Avoid disassembling the pneumatic rod by yourself as there are safety risks involved. After adjustment, the best height is when your feet are flat on the ground, your knees are bent at a 90ยฐ angle, and your elbows are level with the desktop to ensure comfort during prolonged sitting.
