Black Spots on Floor from Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

The main reason for black spots left by office chairs on the floor is friction and wear between the wheels and the floor, which can be resolved by replacing the wheels, using protective pads, or cleaning.

Causes of Black Spots

When office chair wheels rub against the floor, the wheel material (such as rubber or polyurethane) can wear down over time, producing fine particles. The floor material (such as painted wooden floors or epoxy flooring) may also be scratched, producing powder. Additionally, the wheel surface easily attracts dust and other impurities, which mix with the worn particles to form black spots, especially noticeable on hard floors (such as tiles or wooden floors).

Solutions

  1. Fundamental Solution: Replace the Wheels

    • Polyurethane (PU) Wheels: These offer good elasticity, wear resistance, and high hardness, making them suitable for hard floors (such as wooden or tiled floors) and reducing the production of worn particles.
    • Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE/TPR) Wheels: These reduce scratches on the floor through material energy absorption and cushioning design, making them suitable for scenarios requiring high surface protection.
  2. Temporary Solutions: Reduce Friction and Clean

    • Protective Pads: Place transparent adhesive pads or carpets under the chair to isolate direct contact between the wheels and the floor, reducing friction black spots.
    • Physical Cleaning: If the black spots are stains like pencil lead, use a sand-free eraser to wipe in one direction along the mark, or use a hard plastic scraper to slowly remove stubborn particles, avoiding damage to the floor surface.
    • Chemical Cleaning:
      • Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with water in a 3:1 ratio to form a paste, apply it to the stain, let it sit for 10 minutes, then wipe with a soft cloth, suitable for minor stains.
      • Toothpaste: Apply toothpaste to the scratch and rub repeatedly to remove some shallow marks.
  3. Floor Repair

    • Scratch Treatment: Gently sand shallow scratches with a wooden piece, then apply a wax layer, or use a touch-up pen matching the chair's color to fill in the marks, reducing visual differences.
    • Professional Repair: For severe scratches (such as those reaching the wooden layer), it is recommended to contact a housekeeping company or repair personnel to avoid secondary damage from DIY operations.

Daily Maintenance Suggestions

  • Move Gently: Avoid using excessive force when moving office chairs to reduce severe friction between the wheels and the floor.
  • Regular Cleaning: Wipe the wheels and floor dust with a dry cloth weekly to prevent impurity buildup; use a floor-specific polish monthly for maintenance to enhance surface wear resistance.
