Office Chair BIFMA Test

Admin October 19, 2026

The BIFMA test is an internationally authoritative testing standard developed for office furniture, with the testing of office chairs covering core indicators such as structural safety, durability, and load-bearing capacity. Products that pass the test are eligible for access to the North American market.

BIFMA (Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association) is a non-profit American furniture association established in 1973. Its testing standards are known for their strictness and are significantly higher than domestic standards. The testing of office chairs is mainly based on the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 standard system, which includes more than 20 technical requirements and covers the performance verification of various key components of the chair.

Core Testing Components and Methods:

  1. Backrest Testing

    • Static Tensile Test: The chair backrest is fixed at a 70ยฐ inclination angle, and a large tensile force far exceeding normal use (such as several hundred pounds) is applied to verify whether its structure deforms or breaks.
    • Endurance Cycle Test: A mechanical device is used to simulate the scenario of heavy individuals leaning on the chair for a long time. The loading-unloading process is repeated at a high frequency to detect the fatigue strength of the backrest's metal frame and connectors. For example, a certain model of office chair must remain functional after completing 100,000 cycle tests.
  2. Armrest Testing

    • It needs to pass multi-dimensional assessments including vertical pressure, horizontal thrust, and rotational durability. For example, the vertical loading test requires the armrest to withstand a pressure of 200 pounds for 1 minute without damage; the horizontal thrust test simulates the lateral force when a user supports their arms to ensure that the connectors do not loosen.
  3. Gas Lift and Chair Base Testing

    • Gas Lift: It needs to pass the lifting life test (such as continuous lifting for 100,000 times) and the burst pressure test (withstanding a pressure several times the rated load without exploding).
    • Chair Base: A five-star chair base needs to undergo a static load-bearing test (such as remaining undeformed under a load of 400 pounds for 24 hours) and a rolling resistance test to ensure smooth movement without the risk of tipping over.

Standard Evolution and Certification
BIFMA continuously updates its standards to meet market demands: The X5.11 standard released in 2015 formulated special tests for extra-heavy seats weighing 400 pounds (about 181 kg); the X5.1 standard revised in 2017 raised the load threshold to 350 pounds and added structural durability test items. The tests are carried out by third-party organizations such as SGS. Products that pass the certification can be labeled with the BIFMA compliance mark, which becomes an important basis for procurement in the North American market.
