Office Chair Bent Wood

Admin October 09, 2026

Bent wood technology is a commonly used technique for creating curved designs in office chairs, achieving plastic deformation of wood through processes such as steam softening, laminated bending, and mold forming, combining mechanical properties with aesthetic value.

Core Materials and Structure

Office chairs made of bent wood typically use a composite material combination: The inner structural layer is primarily birch, known for its uniform fiber density and excellent bending resistance, making it suitable as a load-bearing layer; The outer decorative layer often uses ash wood, valued for its clear grain and strong wear resistance, enhancing the product's aesthetic appeal; Some high-end products incorporate imported beech wood as a supplementary outer material to further enhance surface hardness and stability. This composite structure ensures both the chair's structural strength and an optimized user experience through the complementary properties of different woods.

Key Manufacturing Processes

  1. Steam Softening Treatment: Wood is placed in a saturated steam environment at 98-105ยฐC for 6-12 hours, increasing its fiber moisture content to 35%-40% and bringing it to a plastic state. This process requires strict control of temperature and time to prevent excessive softening, which could lead to deformation or cracking.
  2. Laminated Bending Technology: Thin birch veneers, 0.6-1.2mm thick, are coated with phenolic resin adhesive and stacked to the desired thickness. The adhesive layer is cured within 60-80 seconds using a high-frequency dielectric heating device. This technique enhances bending resistance through thin-layer stacking while preserving the natural grain of the wood.
  3. Mold Forming Process: Aluminum alloy molds machined by CNC are used for pressurized shaping, with pressure maintained at 10-15 MPa for 8-12 minutes. Complex curved components require secondary pressing to ensure shape accuracy, with a minimum bending radius of up to 12 times the thickness of the wood (compared to 25 times in traditional processes).

Technical Advantages and Performance Metrics

Bent wood office chairs offer significant advantages: Strong moisture and torsion resistance, with a deformation rate of โ‰ค0.3% under temperatures ranging from -20ยฐC to 50ยฐC and humidity levels of 30%-80%; Excellent mechanical properties, with a shear strength of โ‰ฅ12.8 MPa and an elastic modulus of 11.3 GPa for curved components; High material utilization, with a yield rate for curved components 41.5% higher than traditional processes, saving wood resources. Additionally, their smooth contours surpass those of mechanical processing, with no seams or mechanical marks in curved areas, meeting ergonomic design requirements.

Authenticity Identification Points

Authentic bent wood office chairs feature a continuous laminated grain structure in the cross-section of their components, with smooth, unmarked curved areas. The product identification includes a QS-FMC process certification code. Consumers can verify authenticity by observing the cross-sectional grain and certification information to avoid purchasing inferior counterfeits.
