Office Chair or Bench Too High
When an office chair or bench is too high, it can be resolved by finding the control device to adjust, modifying the seat height, or using a footrest, while paying attention to the impact of chair height on knee stability.

Locate the Hand Control Device
Most office chairs are equipped with height adjustment functions, with the control device typically located beneath or on the side of the seat. If seated, try pulling up the control lever (some models may require turning a knob) to adjust. For pneumatic lift chairs, repeatedly pushing the lever up and down (pumping the lever) can raise or lower the seat. Maintain body stability during operation to avoid imbalance caused by sudden movements.Adjust the Seat Height
When moving the seat to the desired position, it is recommended to adjust only a few inches (or centimeters) at a time to gradually find a comfortable height. After adjustment, return the control lever to its original position to lock the height. Some models require lifting the lever to raise the seat and pressing it down to lower it. If adjusting while standing, position the front of the chair just below the knees to ensure that both feet can rest flat on the ground when seated.Use a Footrest for Assistance
If the chair height cannot be adjusted to the ideal position or if both feet remain suspended after adjustment, prepare a footrest. Place the footrest under the desk and rest both feet flat on it to maintain body balance. The height of the footrest should match that of the chair to avoid excessive tension in the leg muscles due to height differences.
Potential Hazards of Improper Chair Height
When the chair is too high and both feet are suspended, knee stability is significantly affected. Prolonged maintenance of this posture may lead to atrophy of the anterior thigh muscles due to lack of effective support and gradual degeneration; increased risk of ligament laxity, as the ligaments around the knee joint lose elasticity due to continuous stretching; and imbalance in knee joint forces, potentially causing pain or inflammation due to abnormal patellar tracking. Additionally, forward shifting of the body's center of gravity forces the lower back to overextend, increasing lumbar pressure and potentially inducing lumbar muscle strain or herniated discs.
Adjustment Recommendations
Chair height adjustment should be based on the user's leg length, ensuring that both feet rest flat on the floor when seated, with the thighs parallel to the ground and the knees bent at 90ยฐ to 100ยฐ. If the chair lacks adjustment functions, improvements can be made by replacing the seat, using an adjustable footrest, or adding a seat cushion. Regularly checking whether the chair height conforms to ergonomic standards can effectively prevent health problems caused by improper posture.
