Behind the Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

There may be various situations behind an office chair, each with different impacts and corresponding solutions:

Presence of a Pillar

Having a pillar behind an office chair can create negative energy (sha qi) in Feng Shui, giving a sense of oppression, easily causing distraction and affecting work mood. If possible, adjust the position to avoid the pillar; if avoidance is not feasible, place large potted plants, shelves, or screens to block it; if no blocking objects can be placed, put a qilin or bagua on the desk facing the pillar to dispel the negative energy.

Making Clunking Noises

If the office chair makes clunking noises from behind, it is usually due to a loose screw, a loose connection between the plastic or metal parts of the chair back, or long-term wear at the connection points of a low-quality chair after prolonged use. After long-term use of the chair, the screws may become loose due to frequent shaking, causing the connection points to loosen. When under pressure, the connection points will experience misalignment and friction, mostly of metal texture, producing squeaking noises. At this time, check and tighten the loose screws.

Feng Shui Layout Considerations

  • Back Against a Wall: In Feng Shui, having a solid wall behind the chair is regarded as a symbol of having a 'reliable backer', implying a stable career foundation and easy access to support from influential people. From a modern perspective, a solid wall provides psychological security and prevents distraction caused by an open space behind. If the wall is white, hang landscape paintings, calligraphy works, or corporate vision slogans to alleviate the sense of coldness and enhance the cultural atmosphere. Avoid sharp-edged decorations to prevent the formation of 'negative energy'.
  • Facing Doors, Windows, Aisles, or Electrical Appliances: Direct airflow hitting the back can lead to a sense of 'no support' and health issues; frequent foot traffic creates 'hidden arrow negative energy', causing restlessness; electrical appliances like air conditioners and printers generate electromagnetic interference, affecting decision-making ability. The solutions are to add screens or file cabinets to create artificial partitions; place broad-leafed plants (such as money trees) to use their vitality to neutralize the flowing negative energy; use high-backed chairs (it is recommended that the chair back height exceed the shoulders) and pair them with brown cushions to enhance the stability attribute of the 'earth' element.
  • Advanced Layout: Adjusting the layout according to the user's Five Elements in their birth chart can further enhance the Feng Shui effect. Metal (suitable for management positions): Place a metal bookshelf behind and pair it with white or gold decorations; Wood (suitable for creative positions): Install a green plant wall or wooden lattice and complement it with green-themed paintings; Water (suitable for sales positions): Hang a Nine Fish Painting or a still water-themed artwork and pair it with a small flowing water ornament; Fire (suitable for technical positions): Use red abstract art paintings and pair them with triangular lamps; Earth (suitable for financial positions): Choose coffee-colored landscape paintings and pair them with ceramic crafts.
