Office Chair Bearing Replacement

Admin October 19, 2026

The replacement of bearings in an office chair can be carried out according to the following steps:

Step 1: Confirm the damage to the bearings
Conduct a comprehensive inspection of the office chair bearings to determine if there are issues such as sluggish rotation, abnormal noise, or complete inability to rotate. If the bearing surface shows significant wear, rust, or deformation, it can be considered damaged. This step is a prerequisite for replacing the bearings to avoid unnecessary operations due to misdiagnosis.

Step 2: Purchase compatible bearings
Select new bearings that are compatible based on the model, brand, and bearing specifications (such as diameter, thickness, material, etc.) of the office chair. They can be obtained through the following channels:

  • Offline channels: Visit furniture stores, office supply stores, or hardware markets, bringing the old bearing or recording its size parameters for comparison.
  • Online platforms: Search for keywords (such as 'office chair bearing + model') on e-commerce platforms, paying attention to the specification descriptions and user reviews in the product details, and prioritizing products with reliable quality and strong compatibility.
It is important to note: Mismatched bearing sizes or materials may lead to installation failure or abnormal use, so be sure to strictly verify the parameters.

Step 3: Remove the old bearings

  1. Stabilize the office chair: Invert the chair or secure it on a stable surface to prevent damage to other components during disassembly.
  2. Loosen the bearings:
    • If the bearings are severely rusted, first apply a loosening agent (such as WD-40) to penetrate the rust layer and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
    • Use a rubber mallet or wooden mallet to gently tap the edge of the bearing, repeatedly tapping along the axial direction until it loosens.
    • If the bearing is fixed with screws, use a screwdriver or wrench of the corresponding size to remove the screws and then take out the bearing.
Operation points: Avoid using a metal hammer to directly tap to prevent damage to the bearing hole or the chair structure.

Step 4: Install the new bearings

  1. Clean the installation site: Wipe the bearing hole and surrounding area with a dry cloth to remove dust or residue.
  2. Align the direction: Embed the new bearing in the bearing hole in its original direction, ensuring that the axis aligns with the rotation axis of the chair.
  3. Secure the bearings: If it is a snap-fit design, gently press until you hear a 'click' sound; if it requires screw fixation, use a tool to tighten it but avoid over-tightening to prevent stripping.
  4. Test the rotation: After installation, manually rotate the chair surface to check if it is smooth and free of abnormal noise, confirming that the bearings are firmly fixed.

Step 5: Seek professional repair (optional)
If you are unfamiliar with the chair structure or encounter complex situations during disassembly (such as the bearing being deeply embedded or the chair material being fragile), it is recommended to contact furniture repair personnel to handle it to avoid secondary damage caused by improper operation.

Precautions

  • Safety first: Wear gloves during disassembly to prevent cuts from metal fragments; if working at heights is required, ensure stable footing.
  • Quality assurance: Prioritize brand bearings or certified alternatives; inferior bearings may shorten the service life or pose safety hazards.
  • Regular maintenance: After replacement, it is recommended to check the bearing status every six months, clean dust in a timely manner, and replenish lubricant to extend the service life.
