Office Chair Bearing Replacement

Admin October 12, 2026

The replacement of office chair bearings should be carried out according to the following steps:

1. Confirm Bearing Damage

Determine whether the bearing is damaged through observation and operation. Common signs include rough rotation, abnormal noises, or complete inability to rotate. If any of these conditions exist, it can be preliminarily determined that the bearing needs to be replaced.

2. Prepare Tools and Suitable Bearings

  1. Tool Preparation: Select tools based on the type of bearing, such as a star-shaped wrench, pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, bearing removers, or bearing pullers.
  2. Purchase of Suitable Bearings: Identify the model and brand of the office chair to ensure that the specifications and dimensions of the new bearing match those of the original bearing exactly, avoiding installation failures or abnormal operation due to size mismatches.

3. Remove Old Bearings

  1. Swivel Chair Types:
    • Invert the chair and use a star-shaped wrench or screwdriver to loosen the screws beneath the seat, then remove the swivel chair cushion.
    • Use pliers or a wrench to remove the base bearing; if removal is difficult, use strong tape to secure the bearing to the base for increased stability before operating.
    • For roller bearings, invert the chair, hold the roller bracket, and gently pull outward (most are snap-fit designs); if the snap is tight, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge, avoiding scratches on the bracket.
  2. Wheelchair Types (Refer to Similar Structures):
    • Peel back the rear wheel dust cover to expose the bearing and hub.
    • Unscrew the fixing screws and remove the wheel fork and wheel.
    • Use a bearing remover or hammer to carefully remove the old bearing, avoiding damage to the hub or other components.

4. Clean and Inspect

  1. Thoroughly clean the installation area to remove oil, debris, and other residues.
  2. Inspect the installation area for wear or damage; if significant issues are found, repair or replace the relevant components.

5. Install New Bearings

  1. Swivel Chair Types:
    • Gently insert the new plastic bearing into the base mounting hole.
    • For roller bearings, apply 1-2 drops of office equipment-specific lubricant to the bearing, rotate the roller to distribute the lubricant evenly, align the roller with the bracket snap, and push in until a "click" sound confirms secure installation.
  2. Wheelchair Types (Refer to Similar Structures):
    • Apply an appropriate amount of grease to the new bearing raceway and cage to ensure smooth operation.
    • Use tools to install the bearing into the hub, ensuring accurate positioning.

6. Reassemble and Inspect

  1. Swivel Chair Types:
    • Reassemble the seat and tighten the screws.
    • After uprighting the chair, push to test the smoothness of the rollers; if there is stuttering, check for residual debris.
  2. Wheelchair Types (Refer to Similar Structures):
    • Reassemble the wheel fork, wheel, dust cover, and other components in the reverse order of disassembly.
    • Check that the tire bolts are tightened, confirm that the braking system is functioning properly, and ensure that the hub rotates without obstruction.

7. Precautions

  1. Exercise caution during operation to avoid damage to components or personal injury from violent disassembly.
  2. Prioritize the selection of reliable-quality bearings to reduce the risk of short-term re-damage.
  3. Ensure that the plastic bearings for swivel chairs strictly match the original model.
  4. It is recommended to maintain or replace bearings annually, keep them clean daily, and regularly check the firmness of connections; replace them promptly if stuttering or wobbling occurs.
  5. If operation is difficult or the structure is unfamiliar, it is advisable to contact professional repair services.
