Office Chair Beam Pressure

Admin October 09, 2026

The phenomenon of an office chair being under a beam pressure belongs to the concept of 'beam pressure' in Feng Shui, referring to the presence of a house beam directly above sitting or lying areas. Traditionally, it is believed to cause restlessness and hinder career progress, and can be resolved through covering, decorating, or placing Feng Shui items.

Causes and Impacts of the Phenomenon

'Beam pressure' is a common concept in Feng Shui, referring to the psychologicalๆš—็คบ (psychological suggestion) caused by theๅŽ‹่ฟซๆ„Ÿ (sense of oppression) from a beam when a person is in the space directly beneath it for an extended period, potentially leading to anxiety and difficulty concentrating. In office settings, the presence of beams above workstations is often related to the building's load-bearing structure, such as the connection between floor slabs and load-bearing columns or the need for large equipment installation, resulting in exposed beams in the office area. Traditional Feng Shui theory posits that the 'oppressive aura' of beams can disrupt the flow of a person's aura, thereby affecting work efficiency and career development. However, this viewpoint has not been scientifically proven and is more of a cultural and psychological interpretation.

Modern Resolution Methods

  1. Physical Covering Method: Installing a false ceiling or suspended ceiling is a direct and effective approach. By using materials such as wood or gypsum board to completely hide the beam, a flat ceiling surface is created, visually eliminating the sense of oppression. This method is suitable for office spaces during the renovation phase or those allowing for modifications, with costs depending on the materials and construction complexity.
  2. Feng Shui Item Harmonization: Place auspicious animal figurines, such as consecrated qilins, on both sides of the beam. The qilin symbolizes auspicousness in Feng Shui and is believed to resolve negative energy and balance the aura. However, it is important to note that the figurines must undergo a proper consecration process and be placed symmetrically to maintain spatial balance.
  3. Decorative Weakening Method: If covering the beam is not feasible, attention can be diverted through false beam decoration or partition cabinetry. For example, designing wooden false beams below the actual beam to create a symmetrical decorative effect; or using bookshelves, plants, or other cabinetry to block the view and reduce the prominence of the beam.

Precautions

The resolution method should be selected based on the actual spatial conditions. For leased office spaces, non-destructive methods such as figurines or decorations are preferred; for owned spaces, ceiling modifications can be considered. Additionally, maintaining sufficient lighting and a tidy layout in the office area can help alleviate psychological pressure and enhance work efficiency.
