Office Chair Base Standard

Admin October 16, 2026

The 'Seat Base' is an industry standard implemented on October 31, 2019, led by the Zhejiang Furniture and Hardware Research Institute. When selecting one, it is essential to focus on core parameters such as explosion-proof design, structural strength, and gas lift rod grade.

1. Explosion-Proof Safety Design

High-quality seat bases incorporate explosion-proof iron plates welded at the position of the gas lift rod (the core component controlling height adjustment). This design prevents the top of the gas lift rod from directly bursting out of the base in the event of abnormal internal pressure or aging, thereby avoiding impact injuries to the user. The explosion-proof iron plate isolates the gas lift rod from other structures of the base through physical barriers, dispersing the impact force even if the gas lift rod fails, significantly enhancing safety.

2. Base Structural Strength

The thickness of the base directly affects its load-bearing capacity and durability. It is recommended to choose a base thickened to 2.5 millimeters (some products still use 1.8 millimeters). Increased thickness enhances resistance to deformation, ensuring greater stability, especially during prolonged reclining or heavy loads. Additionally, double-sided welding processes are more reliable than single-sided welding, reducing the risk of weld failure and preventing base fractures due to localized stress concentration.

3. Gas Lift Rod Grade Standards

Gas lift rods must comply with the European standard EN16955 and are classified into four grades based on load-bearing capacity:

  • Class 1: Less than 1100 Newtons, suitable only for lightweight scenarios;
  • Class 3: 1700-2700 Newtons, recommended for ordinary office scenarios, meeting daily height adjustment needs;
  • Class 4: Over 2700 Newtons, recommended for important positions or heavy users, providing higher safety margins.

The grade of the gas lift rod should be confirmed through markings on the base or the product manual. Avoid using unmarked or low-grade gas lift rods to reduce the risk of bursting.

4. Other Considerations

Check the stability of the connection between the base and the seat surface to avoid looseness that could cause noise or wobbling during use. If the base has a reclining function, test whether the reclining angle is smooth and free of jams, and confirm the reliability of the locking mechanism. Additionally, when purchasing, it is advisable to choose products that have passed national mandatory certifications (such as China's 3C certification) to ensure compliance with safety standards.
