Office Chair Base Replacement

Admin October 19, 2026

The steps for replacing the base (five-star base) of an office chair are as follows:

I. Preparation

  1. Tool Preparation:
    • Rubber mallet (to avoid damaging components with metal strikes), Allen wrenches (common sizes 4mm and 5mm), lubricant (such as WD-40, for loosening rusted components), new five-star base (material options include nylon or metal, with a load capacity of โ‰ฅ100kg).
    • Safety Tips: Before operation, release the internal pressure of the gas lift (method: lightly tap the bottom release valve with a hammer), wear gloves to prevent cuts, and ensure the work area is well-ventilated (lubricants may have irritating odors).

II. Removing the Old Five-Star Base

Choose one of the following methods based on the connection type:

  1. Flat Washer and Snap Ring Structure:
    • Turn the chair upside down and check if there is a flat washer and snap ring at the bottom of the central column. If present, use a tool to remove the snap ring and directly pull out the old five-star base.
  2. Tapered Press-Fit Structure:
    • If there is no snap ring, the five-star base is connected to the steel column via a tapered press-fit. Use an iron hammer to lightly tap the edge of the five-star base, using vibration to loosen and remove it.
  3. Shaking and Lifting Method:
    • Step on the five-star base frame with your feet, grasp both sides of the seat cushion with your hands, shake it left and right, and lift upwards. Repeat the operation until it is removed. If ineffective, try grasping the other two sides of the seat cushion and repeating the action.
  4. Screw Fixing Structure:
    • Turn the chair upside down and use an Allen wrench to remove the 4-6 fixing screws at the bottom of the seat. If the screws are rusted, spray lubricant and let it sit for 10 minutes before trying again; use a rubber mallet to tap the top of the gas lift (where it connects to the seat) and rotate it left and right to assist in pulling out the gas lift and five-star base.

III. Installing the New Five-Star Base

  1. Alignment Installation:
    • Align the center hole of the new five-star base with the bottom of the gas lift and press down vertically until it clicks into place (a clicking sound is ideal).
  2. Testing Stability:
    • Shake the five-star base left and right to confirm there is no looseness or wobbling.

IV. Common Problems and Solutions

  1. Gas Lift Cannot Be Pulled Out:
    • Use a specialized puller tool (reference price: $2-5) to assist in removal, avoiding violent operations that may cause deformation.
  2. Incompatibility of New Components:
    • Check the brand and model of the chair (such as Herman Miller, Okamura, etc.). Some brands require dedicated parts, so compatibility must be confirmed in advance.
  3. Squeaking Noise:
    • Check if the screws are tightened (recommended torque: 0.5-1nยทm), or replace nylon washers to reduce friction.

V. Maintenance Suggestions

  1. Gas Lift Inspection:
    • Regularly check if the gas lift is leaking (indicated by the chair slowly sinking) and replace damaged components promptly.
  2. Cleaning the Casters:
    • Clean the casters of the five-star base every six months to prevent dust buildup from affecting smooth sliding.
