Office Chair Base Replacement
Admin October 17, 2026
Replacing the base of an office chair can be accomplished through self-disassembly and replacement. Users with some hands-on skills can refer to this tutorial for guidance. Here are the specific steps and precautions:

I. Preparation
- Tool Preparation: You will need a screwdriver (choose a Phillips or flat-head type based on the screw type), a rubber mallet (or a hammer with a towel), and an adjustable wrench (which may be needed for disassembling the gas lift).
- Part Purchase: Purchase a new base that is compatible with the original base model or the type of chair (such as an adjustable-height chair or gaming chair). If modifications are involved (e.g., converting a car seat into an office chair), verify in advance that the base dimensions, hole spacing, and mounting method match.
- Environment Preparation: Choose a flat, spacious floor area and place the chair upside down (with the seat facing down) to prevent it from sliding or tipping over during operation.
II. Removing the Old Base
- Separating the Seat from the Base: Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws securing the bottom tray (usually located at the center of the chair legs or along the edge of the tray) and separate the seat from the base. If the screws are rusty, apply a small amount of lubricant to aid in disassembly.
- Disassembling the Chassis: Hold the chair upside down with one hand and strike the edge of the chassis (near the connection point of the gas lift) vertically with a rubber mallet. If you do not have a rubber mallet, use a hammer with a towel wrapped around it to strike several times to separate the chassis from the gas lift. Ensure the striking force is even to avoid damaging the gas lift or chair legs.
- Removing the Gas Lift and Chair Legs: If you need to replace the entire base assembly (including the gas lift and chair legs), use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the fixing nut at the top of the gas lift, then gently rotate and pull out the gas lift. The chair legs are usually fixed with clips or screws; disassemble them according to the structure.
III. Installing the New Base
- Assembling the Base Components: Insert the new gas lift into the center hole of the chair legs and ensure that the clips or screws are securely fastened. If the base comes with a tray, align the tray with the top of the gas lift in advance and tighten the nut.
- Fixing the Chassis: Align the chassis with the top of the gas lift and gently press it down until it is fully embedded. If the chassis and seat are fixed with screws, reset the seat and use a screwdriver to tighten all the screws to ensure a secure connection.
- Testing Functionality: After installation, place the chair upright, adjust the height adjustment function (if it is an adjustable-height chair), and check whether the chassis is stable, the gas lift operates smoothly, and the chair legs contact the ground evenly. Ensure there is no looseness or abnormal noise.
IV. Precautions
- Wear gloves during operation to avoid scratches or pinches to your fingers.
- If the chair has been in use for a long time, it is advisable to also check whether the gas lift is leaking and whether the chair legs are cracked. Replace them if necessary.
- When modifying the base, strictly verify the dimensions to prevent the chair from tilting or being damaged due to a mismatch.
