Office Chair Base Replacement

Admin October 12, 2026

The steps for replacing the base of an office chair are as follows:

Step 1: Prepare Tools
You will need a hammer, preferably a rubber hammer, as its soft material reduces damage to the chair's paint surface. If using a regular iron hammer, prepare an additional towel as a buffer. After preparing the tools, invert the office chair so that the seat faces down and the legs face up, placing it on a flat and scratch-resistant surface to ensure stability during operation.

Step 2: Disassemble the Connection Between the Bottom Tray and the Seat Cushion
Observe the bottom structure of the chair and locate the screws securing the tray to the seat cushion (usually 1-4 screws, located at the edge or center of the tray). Use the corresponding screwdriver (such as a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver) to turn the screws counterclockwise and remove them one by one. If the screws are rusted or stuck due to long-term use, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to assist in disassembly. After the screws are completely removed, gently shake the tray to separate it from the seat cushion. At this point, you can clearly see the connection structure of the base, gas lift, and chair legs.

Step 3: Separate the Old Base
Hold the main body of the chair (such as the seat frame) with one hand and lift the gas lift upside down with the other hand to expose the base. Use a rubber hammer to strike the connection between the base and the gas lift vertically (usually at the center or edge snap-fit of the base). The striking force should be even and moderate to avoid damaging the gas lift by striking too hard. If using an iron hammer, place a towel between the hammer head and the base to prevent scratches on the paint surface. After striking 3-5 times, the connection between the base and the gas lift will gradually loosen. At this point, you can try rotating the base left and right to assist in separation. If the base still does not come off, repeat striking and adjust the angle until it is completely separated.

Step 4: Install the New Base
Align the new base with the top of the gas lift, ensuring that the snap-fits or threads are aligned. If it is a snap-fit connection, press the base downward until you hear a 'click' sound, indicating that it is installed in place. If it is a threaded connection, rotate the base clockwise until it can no longer turn. After installation, reattach the tray to the seat cushion and tighten the screws one by one with a screwdriver to ensure a secure connection. Finally, return the chair to an upright position and check if the base is stable and if the gas lift's height adjustment function is normal.

Precautions:
It is recommended to wear gloves before operation to prevent scratches from screws or tools. If the chair has been in use for a long time, take photos to record the positions of various components before disassembly to avoid confusion during installation. If the connection between the base and the gas lift is too tight, do not strike it forcefully. Instead, contact a professional repair technician for assistance.
