Office Chair Base Repair Guide
Admin October 19, 2026
If the base of your office chair is broken, you can perform targeted repairs based on different types of faults. Here are the specific repair methods:

Loose or Noisy Base
- Check Connections: Lay the chair flat on a level surface. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws securing the base beneath the seat. Check if the connections between the base, gas lift, and seat cushion are loose.
- Address Wear or Deformation: If the screw holes are worn, you can use longer screws or fill the holes with wood glue and wood shavings for reinforcement. If the base is deformed, gently straighten it back into place with a wrench.
- Reinstall: Align the positioning holes of the base and gas lift, and tighten the screws in a diagonal sequence to prevent uneven stress.
Cracked or Damaged Base
- Repair: If the base is made of plastic, apply AB glue to the cracks and reinforce them with metal sheets or carbon fiber cloth. If it's a wooden base, replace it with a metal square tube of the same size.
- Replace the Base: Measure the dimensions of the original base, purchase a replacement of the same model, and follow the installation steps to replace it.
Damaged Casters
- Remove Old Casters: Determine the type of casters. For threaded-head casters, unscrew them counterclockwise. For spring-clip casters, simply press the clip to remove them.
- Install New Casters: Purchase casters of the matching model. For threaded-head casters, screw them in tightly. For spring-clip casters, align them with the holes and press until the clip locks into place.
Other Situations
If the chair leans to one side due to a base issue, prepare a hammer (a rubber mallet is preferable, but a regular hammer will also work). Turn the chair upside down on the floor, remove the screws securing the bottom tray, and separate it from the seat cushion. Then, hold the chair upside down with one hand and strike the base with the rubber mallet (if using an iron hammer, place a towel over the base to prevent scratching the paint). After striking it a few times, the base should separate.
Precautions:
- Release the pressure in the gas lift before performing repairs to avoid accidental ejection.
- When welding a metal base, take safety precautions and wear protective gear. A repaired plastic base should not bear a load exceeding 100 kg.
- If the connection between the base and gas lift is damaged, check if the gas lift is deformed and replace it if necessary.
