Office Chair Base Repair
Admin October 12, 2026
Office chair base repair requires targeted handling based on the specific type of fault. Here are common repair steps and precautions:

I. Fault Types and Troubleshooting
- Sideways tilt or inability to adjust height: This is often due to faults in the base or the gas lift. A deformed base can cause the chair to tilt, while a malfunctioning gas lift affects the height adjustment function.
- Failure of the height adjuster: This manifests as the inability to raise or lower the chair, or the chair sinking automatically when sat on. It is usually caused by aging and pressure leakage in the internal pneumatic height adjuster.
- Difficulty in separating the base from the seat cushion: After long-term use, the connection may become obstructed due to rust or deformation of the snap fasteners.
II. Repair Steps
Base repair
- Disassembly preparation: Turn the chair upside down and use a screwdriver to remove the fixing screws of the chair legs, gas lift, and base.
- Separating the base: If the base is stuck to the seat cushion, gently tap the edge of the base with a rubber mallet, or place a towel and then tap specific positions with an iron hammer (avoid tapping the metal surface directly) to loosen the connection.
- Replacing components: Check if the base is deformed or broken. If damaged, replace it with a base of the same model. If the snap fasteners are aged, adjust or replace the snap fastener assembly.
Gas lift repair
- Fault confirmation: If the gas lift cannot adjust height or has a jerky movement, use a hammer to tap the bottom of the gas lift flat on the side (avoid the middle button) and test if the elasticity is restored.
- Replacement criteria: Choose a gas lift with international certifications such as SGS and TUV to ensure safety performance. When installing, clean the connection at the base, apply lubricating grease, insert it vertically, and tighten it.
Height adjuster replacement
- Removing the old part: Remove the seat cushion and base assembly, use a wrench to disassemble the aged height adjuster, and clean the residue at the base.
- Installing the new part: Insert the new gas rod into the base, align it vertically, tighten the fixing screws, and finally lubricate the moving parts.
III. Repair Services and Costs
- Service modes: Some merchants offer one-stop services including on-site inspection, component replacement, and on-site debugging, which are suitable for bulk maintenance in companies or home use scenarios.
- Price references: Repair costs vary by region and service content. For example, repairing the base of an executive chair in Xuhui District, Shanghai, costs about ยฅ50, while in Guangzhou, it costs about ยฅ80. The specific cost depends on the local service provider's quote.
IV. Safety Precautions
- Wear gloves during repair to avoid cuts from metal components.
- When replacing the gas lift, strictly follow the operating procedures to prevent explosion risks (low-quality gas lifts without safety certifications can easily cause accidents).
- If welding or structural repair is involved, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel to avoid safety hazards caused by self-operation.
