Removing the Base of an Office Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

The core steps for removing the base of an office chair are as follows:

I. Preparation

  1. Tool Preparation:
    • Core Tools: Rubber mallet (or a hammer wrapped in thick cloth), work gloves;
    • Auxiliary Tools: Phillips/flat-head screwdrivers (for some models requiring disassembly of the seat from the gas lift rod), penetrating oil (such as WD-40, for rusted parts), soft pads or old carpets (to protect the floor and chair wheels).
  2. Environment Setup:
    • Choose an open, flat area, lay down soft pads, and then invert the office chair to ensure it remains stable and does not slide.

II. Separating the Base from the Gas Lift Rod

  1. Locate the Striking Point:
    • Observe the center of the base and find the metal collar (steel ring) connecting it to the gas lift rod; this is the key striking area.
  2. Strike to Loosen:
    • Wearing gloves, hold the rubber mallet and strike evenly along the side circumference of the metal collar to loosen the metal connectors that have been tightly pressed for a long time through vibration.
    • After striking, try to twist and pull up the base from side to side. If it does not loosen, repeat the striking; multiple rounds of operation may be required.
  3. Dealing with Rust (Optional):
    • If the connection is severely rusted, spray penetrating oil before striking and let it soak for 10-15 minutes before proceeding.

III. Handling Advanced Situations

  1. Situations Requiring Prior Disassembly of the Seat:
    • If, after inverting, you find that the top end of the gas lift rod is screwed onto the seat chassis, you need to first use a screwdriver to remove the screws, separate the seat from the gas lift rod, and then handle the base.
  2. Response to Ineffective Striking:
    • If the connection is too tight, continuously repeat the striking and separation attempts, avoiding violent disassembly that could damage the components.

IV. Precautions for Disassembling Executive Chairs

  1. Tool Differences: Additional tools such as pliers and lubricating oil may be required.
  2. Step Adjustments:
    • First, remove the seat cushion (step on the chair legs, shake, or strike the connection);
    • After inverting, strike the base collar, remove the screws from the upper seat, and then separate the upper seat from the gas lift rod;
    • If the connection is tight, apply lubricating oil and let it sit before disassembly.

Key Tips: Wear gloves throughout the operation to avoid cuts from metal debris; if the gas lift rod is aged or stuck, it is recommended to contact a professional for handling to prevent injury from sudden ejection of the gas lift rod.
