Office Chair Base Orientation

Admin October 11, 2026

The installation of an office chair base has specific directional requirements. Installing it incorrectly can lead to serious problems and requires reinstallation using the correct method.

Correct Installation Direction

Taking the lifting base (gas spring) of an office chair as an example, the correct installation direction follows the principle of 'thick at the bottom and thin at the top'. That is, the thicker end of the cylinder (outer shell) should face downward and connect to the five-star base, while the thinner end of the piston rod should face upward and connect to the seat (cushion). This design is based on the precise force balance mechanism inside the gas spring, ensuring stable and safe operation of the lifting function.

Hazards of Incorrect Installation

If the base is installed incorrectly, such as with the thin end of the gas spring facing downward, it will disrupt the precise internal force balance. This can lead to a series of problems, including lifting stuttering, where users may feel uneven when adjusting the chair height; abnormal noises, affecting the user experience; potential air leakage, preventing the gas spring from maintaining normal pressure and causing unstable chair height; and even damage to the sealing structure, significantly shortening the lifespan of the gas spring while posing safety hazards, such as sudden failure of the gas spring causing the user to fall and get injured.

Reinstallation Steps

If the base of a computer chair is installed incorrectly, it can be disassembled and reinstalled following these steps:

  • Separate Chair Components: Loosen the screws on the base to separate the upper and lower parts of the chair.
  • Disassemble Gas Spring and Chair Feet: Lift the chair to make the feetๆ‚ฌ็ฉบ (hang in the air), and use a rubber mallet to strike the feet to remove the gas spring and feet.
  • Disassemble Base: Hold the gas spring upside down and strike the base until it detaches. Since the gas spring is tapered at both ends and fits into the feet and base respectively, striking in the opposite direction of installation will complete the disassembly.
  • Reinstall: Install the base and seat cushion in the same direction as marked by the manufacturer to ensure correct installation, then install the backrest to complete the entire installation process.
