Office Chair Base Modification

Admin October 10, 2026

There are various modification options for office chair bases, allowing you to choose from methods such as replacing caster wheels, upgrading gas cylinders, or modifying car seats based on your needs. Specific operations should be evaluated in combination with tools and hands-on skills.

1. Replacing Caster Wheels If the chair moves unevenly, makes excessive noise, or has worn-out wheels, replacing the caster wheels should be a priority. The steps are as follows: Use a screwdriver or scissors to pry off the old wheels, then align the new wheels with the pins and press until they lock. It is recommended to choose stemless spring-loaded silent caster wheels, which roll smoothly and do not damage wooden floors. The cost is usually within a few dozen yuan, and the process takes about 8 minutes. This operation does not require disassembling the chair body, and the tool requirements are simple (a screwdriver or scissors will suffice). It is considered an entry-level modification that beginners can complete independently.

2. Upgrading Gas Cylinders An aging or leaking gas cylinder can cause the seat to sink or fail to lock at the desired height, necessitating replacement with a new cylinder. This operation requires two people: One person should step on the five-star base to stabilize it, while the other person shakes the armrests to separate the seat from the base. Then, flip the five-star base over, place a cloth underneath, and use a large sledgehammer to strike the bottom edge of the gas cylinder all around to remove the old cylinder. Reverse the process to install the new cylinder. Be sure to choose a gas cylinder from a brand that has passed safety certification (such as the Korean SHS carbon black inner cylinder). The cost of accessories is a few dozen yuan, and the entire process takes about 1 hour. This operation requires tools such as a large sledgehammer and a cloth, and it is recommended for users with some hands-on experience.

3. Modifying Car Seats

  • Low-Cost DIY: You can purchase a used second-row seat from a Buick GL8 (the fabric version costs about 300 yuan, and the leather version costs about 500 yuan) and adjust the base according to online tutorials. Note that the second-row seats of the GL8 come in 652 and 653 versions, differing in the position of the seatbelt attachment (the seatbelt is on the seat in the 653 version and on the vehicle body in the 652 version). Be sure to confirm this when making your purchase.
  • Professional Modification: Find a professional shop to adjust the padding on the original vehicle frame (such as adding buckwheat hulls). The cost is about 800-2000 yuan, and the original vehicle functions can be retained. This method involves electrical and structural modifications, so it is recommended to entrust it to a professional modification shop or repair garage.

Before modification, clarify your needs and prepare tools: Common tools include a Phillips screwdriver, wrenches, sockets (such as a 13mm socket), hydraulic wrenches, electric drills, and drill bits. If you are only replacing the caster wheels, a single screwdriver will suffice; disassembling the gas cylinder requires a large sledgehammer and a cloth; modifying car seats requires assessing electrical and structural risks, and it is advisable to prioritize professional services.
