Office Chair Base Locking Issues

Admin October 11, 2026

The issues and solutions regarding office chair base locking are as follows:

I. Getting Stuck When Reclining An office chair may fail to return to an upright position after reclining, possibly due to improper operation, foreign object obstruction, or mechanical component failure.

  1. Operation Issues: Check if the control lever has been accidentally pushed in or stuck below the fixed hole, or if it has not been fully pulled out to release the lock. Solution: Pull the control lever out completely with force and hold it until the backrest returns to its original position, then push it back in.
  2. Foreign Object Obstruction: The rotating shaft area at the bottom of the backrest or the gaps in the base mechanism may be blocked by foreign objects. Solution: Clear away any foreign objects to ensure the rotating shaft and gaps are free of debris.
  3. Mechanical Failure: Components such as the hydraulic system, lock block/tongue, lock post, control paddle, or spring may be damaged. Solution: If the backrest cannot spring back, manually assist it in returning to position and check the spring tension; if the mechanism feels stiff, apply lubricating oil (such as engine oil) to areas like the control lever connection shaft for simple maintenance.

II. Getting Stuck When Moving the Chair Moving an office chair requires adjusting the gas lift rod latch or the slide rail unlocking mechanism.

  1. Regular Ergonomic Chairs: Stand to the side of the chair, find the circular knob or lever at the connection between the chair leg and seat, press it, and then push the chair forward or backward to adjust its position. Release the knob to lock it automatically.
  2. Five-Star Base Models with Casters: Be careful to avoid scraping when pushing; adjusting is easier with these models.
  3. Old-Style Fixed-Leg Office Chairs: First, loosen the fixing screws below the chair legs, adjust the position, and then tighten the screws to reset them.

III. Getting Stuck When Adjusting the Height Failure to adjust the height may be caused by wear on the gas lift rod, a stuck spring assembly, or displacement of the base connection device.

  1. Gas Lift Rod Issues: If the gas lift rod makes abnormal noises or leaks air, and it sinks significantly when sitting down with force and cannot fix the height, it is usually due to a failed seal ring. Solution: Rotate the decorative cover on top of the gas lift rod counterclockwise, clear away any debris, and apply engine oil for lubrication.
  2. Displacement of the Base Connection Device: Hold the seat cushion and turn the base locking knob horizontally to check if the three-way connection device is displaced. Solution: Clear away any thread-like debris or rustๆธฃ (rust particles) in the steel ball track and ensure the positioning holes of the gear engagement plate are properly aligned.
  3. Control Lever Failure: If the height adjustment control lever bounces back weakly after being pressed all the way down, check if the screws on the joint connecting rod at the bottom are loose (triggering limit self-locking if loose by more than 3mm). Solution: Tighten any loose screws and spray a maintenance agent like WD-40 at the lever connection for lubrication.
  4. Deformation of the Metal Elastic Clip: If the metal elastic clip is warped by more than 3 degrees, use fish-tail pliers to clamp the bent part and correct its curvature.
