Office Chair Base Lifting

Admin October 14, 2026

The lifting function of an office chair base is typically achieved through a pneumatic device, with its core principle relying on the movement of a piston rod within a cylinder to adjust the seat height.

Pneumatic lifting chairs are the most common type in office settings. Their operation is based on the pressure changes of compressed gas inside the cylinder. Taking the Jingdong Jingzao Z5 Pro ergonomic chair as an example, this product uses a 4-stage pneumatic rod. It generates pressure through the high-purity nitrogen filled inside. When the user activates the lifting control mechanism (such as the lever under the seat), the piston rod inside the cylinder moves due to the pressure difference, thereby raising or lowering the seat. This design supports a 50mm adjustable backrest, which can accommodate the needs of users of different heights, demonstrating the flexibility and adaptability of pneumatic lifting.

The widespread adoption of pneumatic lifting chairs is closely related to their cost advantages and ease of operation. Compared to hydraulic lifting devices, pneumatic structures are simpler and do not require a complex hydraulic oil circuit system. As a result, manufacturing costs are lower, and the adjustment process does not require continuous force application. Users can complete height adjustments with a single hand. Additionally, the response speed of the pneumatic rod is relatively fast, meeting the needs of scenarios that require rapid adjustments.

However, the safety of pneumatic lifting chairs requires special attention. The quality of the pneumatic rod directly determines the usage risk. If inferior steel is used or the gas purity is insufficient (such as the presence of oxygen), explosions may occur under frequent lifting or high-temperature conditions. Therefore, it is crucial to choose products from reputable manufacturers. Regular products usually pass international safety certifications (such as the BIFMA standard) and are equipped with safety features like explosion-proof steel plates.

Although hydraulic lifting chairs exist, their market share in China is relatively low. Their principle involves using hydraulic oil to transmit pressure to drive piston movement. The advantages include strong load-bearing capacity and high stability, but the drawbacks are also significant: the hydraulic system is costly, and the adjustment sensitivity is not as good as that of pneumatic systems. Continuous force application is required during operation, so they are more commonly used in industrial equipment or special scenarios rather than ordinary office environments.

Summary: Pneumatic lifting is the mainstream for office chair bases, with its core being the nitrogen pressure inside the cylinder driving piston movement. It offers the advantages of low cost and flexible operation, but it is essential to prioritize choosing regular products to ensure safety. Hydraulic lifting has limited application due to cost and user experience issues.
