Office Chair Base Knowledge
The office chair base is the core component that supports, adjusts, and moves the chair, and its design directly affects sitting comfort and safety.

Composition and Functions of the Base
An office chair base consists of four core components:
- Base Frame: Typically made of metal or high-strength plastic, it ensures load-bearing capacity and fatigue resistance, serving as the foundational structure that supports the entire chair.
- Adjustment Mechanism: Integrates height adjustment, tilt angle adjustment, and locking functions. Users can adjust the seat posture via handles or knobs to suit different work scenarios. For example, high-end bases are equipped with dynamic tilt systems that automatically adjust the angle between the backrest and seat cushion based on sitting posture, reducing concentrated body pressure.
- Gas Cylinder Connection Component: Connects to the lifting column, enabling flexible height adjustment of the seat. It usually requires safety certification (such as BIFMA standards) to prevent explosion risks.
- Casters (Wheels): The material is selected based on the floor type (e.g., soft wheels for carpets, hard wheels for hard floors), ensuring smooth movement and protecting the floor.
Types of Bases and Their Suitable Scenarios
There are various types of bases with distinct functions:
- Ordinary Base (Fixed): No adjustment functions, suitable for low-cost bow chairs or four-legged chairs.
- Single Tilt Base: The backrest can tilt 20-30ยฐ, but cannot be locked, commonly found in basic staff chairs.
- Single Tilt Base with Lock: The tilt angle can be locked (e.g., 90ยฐ for work, 110ยฐ for slight reclining), suitable for mainstream office chairs.
- Synchronous Tilt Base: When reclining, the seat cushion and backrest move in tandem, avoiding thigh compression, often used in ergonomic chairs priced above a thousand yuan.
- Cable-Controlled Base: All adjustment functions are controlled centrally via a handle, eliminating the need to bend over and enhancing convenience.
- Gravity-Sensing Base: Automatically adjusts the recline resistance based on body weight, providing personalized support.
Technological Development and Industry Trends
Early base technologies (such as fixed bases and single torsion spring bases) had issues like uneven elasticity and insufficient support, mostly applied in products priced around a thousand yuan. With the entry of international brands into the Chinese market, domestic companies accelerated technological iterations, introducing the fourth-generation dual-spring base and the fifth-generation small-tilt dual-fiberglass base. Among them, the fifth-generation fiberglass base replaces torsion springs with fiberglass material, achieving balanced elasticity and long-lasting durability, becoming a standard feature in high-end foreign chair models. In the future, bases will evolve towards intelligence (such as adaptive adjustment) and lightweight design (such as carbon fiber materials), further integrating ergonomic and environmental protection concepts.
