Office Chair Base Knob

Admin October 12, 2026

The knobs on the base of office chairs vary in function depending on their design. Here are some common types and their roles:

  1. Height Adjustment Knob Some office chair bases are equipped with round or square knobs for controlling seat height. These work by rotating to adjust the internal valve of the gas lift or the mechanical locking mechanism: turning clockwise typically lowers the seat height, while turning counterclockwise raises it. For gas lift types, body weight is required for operation, whereas knob types allow direct rotation for height adjustment. When using, note that gas lift adjustment should be done slowly to avoid damage from rapid operation; for knob types, ensure the knob is fully returned to prevent unintended seat height changes.

  2. Recline Amplitude and Elasticity Adjustment Knob The larger knob on the base is usually used to adjust the chair's recline function. Tightening it clockwise reduces the recline amplitude and increases resilience, suitable for scenarios requiring an upright sitting posture; loosening it counterclockwise increases the recline amplitude and decreases resilience, ideal for relaxation. Additionally, this knob may adjust the softness (damping) of the chair's swing by changing the compression or expansion state of the spring. For example, tightening the knob may compress the spring more tightly, increasing rebound resistance; loosening it relaxes the spring, reducing resistance. Avoid over-tightening to prevent damage to the internal spring or mechanical structure.

  3. Forward-Backward Movement Amplitude and Softness Adjustment Knob Some knobs are connected to the internal mechanical structure via bolts. Rotating them can change the range of the chair's forward-backward movement while adjusting the softness (damping) of the swing. For example, rotating clockwise may narrow the forward-backward movement range and increase damping, making the chair swing more stably; rotating counterclockwise expands the movement range and reduces damping, making the chair swing more flexibly. When using, apply moderate force to avoid bolt loosening or internal part damage from excessive rotation.

Usage Precautions:

  • Adjust knobs with moderate force to avoid damaging internal parts through violent operation.
  • If the chair exhibits abnormal elasticity after long-term use (e.g., weak recline or overly fast rebound), check if the knob is loose or if the internal spring is aging, and contact professional maintenance if necessary.
  • When adjusting height, ensure the seat is fully locked at the target height to prevent sudden seat drop due to gas lift failure.
