Explosion of Office Chair Base
The explosion of an office chair base typically refers to the sudden explosion of a pneumatic lift-type office chair caused by component defects, primarily due to inferior pneumatic rods, posing a significant hazard. It is essential to prevent risks through proper selection and correct usage.

Causes of Explosion
- Material Defects in Pneumatic Rods: Inferior pneumatic rods have overly thin walls that cannot withstand the long-term impact of high-pressure gas inside. For example, some products reduce the wall thickness from the standard 2 millimeters to less than 1 millimeter to cut costs, resulting in decreased compressive strength.
- Impure Gas Composition: Standard pneumatic rods should be filled with high-purity nitrogen (an inert gas), but inferior products may use compressed air instead. The oxygen in the air reacts with the metal inner wall, generating rust and accumulating heat, creating a 'pressure cooker effect' that ultimately leads to an explosion.
- Improper Usage: Frequent lifting and lowering of the seat can cause a sudden increase in the internal temperature of the pneumatic rod, accelerating gas expansion; prolonged exposure to high-temperature environments (such as near radiators or in sunlight) can also weaken the stability of the pneumatic rod.
Hazards of Explosion
When a pneumatic rod explodes, the compressed gas inside is released at extremely high speed, with an impact force reaching hundreds of kilograms. Typical cases include:
- 2007 Zhoushan, Zhejiang Incident: The explosion of a pneumatic rod caused the user's buttocks and legs to be cut by chair fragments, resulting in severe damage to the rectum and anal canal.
- 2009 Jiaozhou, Shandong Incident: A 14-year-old boy was fatally injured when the top rod of a pneumatic chair pierced his body while adjusting it.
Preventive Measures
- Select Genuine Products: Prioritize office chairs priced above 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications (such as the BIFMA standard) and avoid purchasing 'three-no' products (no brand, no factory, no certification).
- Inspect Key Components:
- Test whether the pneumatic rod lifts and lowers smoothly without jamming or unusual noises;
- Confirm that a blast-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod (verify by touch or checking the product specifications).
- Adopt Proper Usage Habits:
- Avoid frequent lifting and lowering of the seat (no more than 10 times per day);
- Keep away from high-temperature environments, such as radiators, air conditioning units, or areas exposed to direct sunlight.
Regulatory Status
According to a 2020 inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation, 23.3% of office chairs failed quality checks, with 17 batches of swivel chairs having issues such as substandard high/low-temperature resistance of pneumatic rods and lack of blast-proof steel plates. Consumers can reduce safety risks by scanning the product QR code or checking the official website to verify certification information.
