Office Chair Base Explosion

Admin October 16, 2026

The explosion of an office chair base typically refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon caused by component defects in pneumatic lift swivel chairs, often related to low-quality pneumatic rods, and requires prevention through standardized purchasing and usage.

Causes of Explosion

The explosion risk of pneumatic lift swivel chairs mainly stems from design or material defects in the pneumatic rods. Thin walls of the pneumatic rod are a common cause. When the wall thickness is insufficient, the high-pressure gas inside (usually nitrogen) may cause the wall to rupture due to pressure imbalance or external impact. Insufficient purity of the inert gas or its replacement with compressed air significantly increases the probability of explosion. Nitrogen is chemically stable, while compressed air contains oxygen, which can easily trigger oxidation reactions at high temperatures, leading to a sudden increase in pressure. Additionally, frequent lifting and lowering causing a sudden temperature rise may cause the gas inside the pneumatic rod to expand. If there are cracks or welding defects in the wall at this time, an explosion may occur.

Typical Cases and Hazards

Several serious accidents have occurred in history. In a 2007 case in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, a chair was blown through, with metal fragments embedding up to ten centimeters into a person's body. In 2009, a 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong, was impaled in the buttocks by a lifting rod while adjusting a pneumatic chair and ultimately died from excessive blood loss. These cases demonstrate that explosions can not only cause mechanical injuries but also lead to fatal consequences.

Quality Hazards and Regulatory Data

According to the 2020 sampling inspection results of the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3%, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues were concentrated on the substandard high- and low-temperature resistance performance of the pneumatic rods and the lack of explosion-proof steel plates. Insufficient high- and low-temperature resistance may cause the pneumatic rod to deform or rupture under extreme temperatures. The function of the explosion-proof steel plate is to block flying fragments in the event of a pneumatic rod explosion. If it is missing or its thickness is insufficient (should be โ‰ฅ2 millimeters), it will directly threaten the safety of the user.

Preventive Measures

  1. Purchase genuine products: Prioritize office chairs priced above 200 yuan that have passed national safety certifications (such as the GB/T 3325-2016 standard) and avoid buying "three-no" products.
  2. Check the quality of the pneumatic rod: When adjusting the seat, if the lifting is not smooth, stutters, or makes abnormal noises, it may indicate defects in the pneumatic rod, and caution should be exercised in use.
  3. Confirm the installation of the explosion-proof steel plate: Press the connection between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod with your hand. If you can clearly feel a metal plate with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters, it meets the safety requirements.
  4. Avoid frequent lifting and lowering: Reduce the operation of continuously adjusting the seat height in a short period to prevent the pneumatic rod from overheating.
