Disassembly and Assembly of Office Chair Base
Admin October 11, 2026
The steps for disassembling and assembling the base of an office chair are as follows:

Disassembly Steps
Preparation
- Tool Preparation: You will need a rubber mallet (or an iron hammer wrapped in thick cloth), gloves, screwdrivers (both Phillips and flat-head), a loosening agent (such as WD-40), and a soft pad or old carpet.
- Environment Setup: Choose an open and flat area, lay down a soft pad, and then invert the office chair and place it upside down to ensure stability.
Separating the Base from the Gas Lift
- Locate the Connection Point: Observe the center of the base and find the metal collar (steel ring) that connects to the gas lift.
- Tap to Loosen: Use the rubber mallet to continuously tap along the circumference of the metal collar to loosen the connection that has been tightly pressed for a long time through vibration.
- Attempt Separation: After tapping, hold the five-star base with both hands, twist it left and right, and pull it upward; if it does not loosen, repeat the tapping.
- Handle Rust: If the connection is severely rusted, spray the loosening agent and let it soak for 10-15 minutes before tapping again.
Handling Special Cases
- If the top of the gas lift is secured to the chair seat chassis with screws, use a screwdriver to remove the screws first and then separate the chair seat from the gas lift.
- If it still cannot be disassembled after multiple taps, apply lubricating oil and let it sit for a while before continuing to try.
Assembly Steps
- Connecting the Base to the Gas Lift: Align the new base with the gas lift and gently tap the metal collar with a rubber mallet to make it fit tightly.
- Securing the Chair Seat (if necessary): If you need to connect the chair seat, re-fix the top of the gas lift to the chair seat chassis with screws.
Precautions
- Safety Protection: Always wear gloves to avoid cuts; protect the appearance of the chair and prevent scratches on the floor during operation.
- Handling Complex Structures: If you encounter difficult-to-disassemble parts (such as hidden screws or snap-fit structures), it is advisable to contact a professional.
- Tool Suitability: Choose tools according to the material of the base. For example, avoid excessive tapping on a plastic base to prevent cracking.
Key Tip: It is recommended to take photos to record the positions of each part before disassembly for easy restoration during assembly; if the gas lift cannot be separated due to aging, the entire gas lift assembly needs to be replaced.
