Office Chair Base Disassembly

Admin October 22, 2026

There are mainly two common methods for disassembling the base of an office chair:

Method 1: Regular Disassembly Method

First, you need to separate the backrest from the base. This step is usually relatively simple. For some office chairs, the backrest is connected to the base via snaps or screws. If it's connected by snaps, try to locate the snap positions and gently pry them open. If it's connected by screws, use an appropriate screwdriver to unscrew them, thus completing the separation of the backrest and the base.

Next, raise the gas lift to its highest position. The gas lift is a crucial component for the height adjustment of the office chair. Raising it to the highest position facilitates the subsequent disassembly of the base. During this operation, ensure that the gas lift is stable to avoid damage or it popping out and causing injury due to improper handling.

Then, firmly grasp the seat cushion with one hand and press the height adjustment lever with the other. The height adjustment lever is usually located on one side of the office chair. Pressing it allows you to control the height adjustment of the gas lift. While pressing the lever, gently shake the base several times. Through shaking, the connection between the base and the gas lift can be loosened. After multiple shakes, the base can usually be smoothly removed.

Method 2: Inverted Knocking Method

Place the swivel chair upside down with the base facing upwards. This is done to facilitate the subsequent knocking operation on the base and also to avoid damaging other parts of the office chair during the knocking process.

Prepare a rubber mallet and knock firmly around the bottom steel ring. A rubber mallet has a certain degree of elasticity, so it won't cause excessive impact force to damage the components when knocking, while still providing enough force to loosen the base. During the knocking process, apply force evenly to ensure that the entire steel ring is knocked.

After knocking around the ring once, try to pry the base. If the base is still not loose, do not forcefully pry it to avoid damaging the base or other structures of the office chair. At this point, knock firmly around the steel ring again with the rubber mallet and then try to pry the base. Repeat the process of "knocking and then prying" until the base can be smoothly removed.
