Office Chair Base Disassembly

Admin October 13, 2026

You can refer to the following two methods for disassembling the base of an office chair:

Method 1: Regular Disassembly Method

  1. Separate the Backrest: First, you need to release the connection structure between the backrest and the base. In most office chairs, the backrest is fixed with screws or clips. Use a screwdriver or wrench of the corresponding size to rotate the screws counterclockwise or press the clip release mechanism to separate the backrest from the base. Be sure to keep the removed screws or accessories to avoid losing them.
  2. Disassemble the Base: Raise the pneumatic rod to its highest position to ensure it is fully extended. At this point, hold the seat cushion firmly with one hand and press the lift lever (usually located under or on the side of the seat cushion) with the other hand while gently shaking the base. The purpose of shaking is to loosen the connection between the pneumatic rod and the base. By repeatedly pressing the lever and shaking, the base will gradually separate from the pneumatic rod. Control the force during this process to avoid damaging the pneumatic rod or causing the seat cushion to fall off due to excessive force.

Method 2: Impact Disassembly Method (for stubborn connections)

  1. Invert and Secure: Invert the base of the office chair so that the five-pointed chair wheels are facing upwards. To prevent the chair wheels from sliding or scratching the floor during disassembly, place soft cloth, foam board, or other cushioning materials under the chair wheels. At the same time, press down on the edges of the chair wheels with a heavy object (such as a book) to secure them in place.
  2. Precise Striking: Prepare a hammer. To avoid damaging the surface of the base or the pneumatic rod by direct striking, wrap the head of the hammer with a towel or thick cloth. Aim at the junction between the gas rod connection and the base (usually the joint between the bottom of the pneumatic rod and the metal part of the base) and strike it 2-3 times with a quick and short force. Keep the striking direction vertical to avoid bending the pneumatic rod due to lateral force. Through the impact vibration, the base may naturally fall off due to its own weight and the loosening of the connection parts. If the first strike is unsuccessful, adjust the striking position and repeat the operation, but control the total number of strikes to no more than 5 times to prevent damage to the internal structure of the pneumatic rod.

Precautions:

  • Before disassembly, make sure the office chair is powered off (if it has electric functions) and clear the surrounding space to avoid injury from flying parts.
  • If there are anti-slip patterns or glue fixing the connection between the base and the pneumatic rod, you can first heat the glue with a hairdryer to soften it and then try to disassemble it.
  • Store the disassembled parts separately for easy subsequent assembly or repair.
