Office Chair Base Direction

Admin October 10, 2026

The correct installation direction for the lifting base (gas spring) of an office chair is to have the thicker cylinder (outer casing) end facing downwards, connecting to the five-star base, and the thinner piston rod end facing upwards, connecting to the seat (cushion), following the rule of 'thick down, thin up'. This installation direction is the physical foundation for ensuring the safe and stable lifting of the office chair. If installed incorrectly, it will not only affect normal functionality but may also pose potential safety risks.

From a structural perspective, the gas spring is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas, and the lifting adjustment of the seat is achieved through the extension and retraction of the piston rod. The thicker cylinder (outer casing), as the main structure of the gas spring, houses the high-pressure gas and piston components inside and requires more stable support. Installing it facing downwards and connecting it to the five-star base utilizes the larger contact area and stable structure of the five-star base to provide a solid support foundation for the gas spring, ensuring stability when bearing the weight of the human body and undergoing frequent lifting operations.

The thinner piston rod end faces upwards and connects to the seat because the piston rod needs to extend and retract during the operation of the gas spring. Installing it facing upwards reduces friction and resistance at the connection with the seat, making the lifting process smoother. At the same time, the thinner piston rod can better adapt to the structural design of the seat, ensuring a tight and stable connection.

If the gas spring is installed incorrectly, with the thicker cylinder facing upwards and the thinner piston rod facing downwards, it will cause the center of gravity of the gas spring to shift upwards, reducing overall stability. When bearing the weight of the human body, there may be shaking, tilting, etc., affecting the user experience and safety. In addition, incorrect installation may also damage the sealing structure inside the gas spring, leading to gas leakage and other issues, further affecting the normal use of the office chair.
