Office Chair Ball Bearings
The ball bearings of a swivel chair are key components at the base of the chair that support and enable 360-degree free rotation. Their functionality directly affects the chair's ease of use, comfort, and durability. The following provides an explanation from three aspects: core functions, selection criteria, and maintenance methods.

I. Core Functions
Swivel chair ball bearings replace sliding friction with rolling friction, allowing the chair to rotate in multiple directions with minimal resistance. Their design must meet two core requirements:
- Support Stability: They need to evenly distribute the user's weight and dynamic pressure to prevent local overload and structural deformation. For example, in office scenarios with prolonged sitting or frequent turning, the ball bearings must maintain both axial and radial stability.
- Smooth Rotation: High-quality ball bearings can reduce the friction coefficient to the 0.001-0.003 range, resulting in a rotational resistance of less than 2N for "effortless" operation. Additionally, the surface roughness of precision-machined ball bearings must be controlled below Ra0.1ฮผm to reduce noise and extend service life.
II. Selection Criteria
Material Suitability
- Stainless Steel Ball Bearings: Suitable for high-load scenarios (e.g., industrial chairs), with a hardness of HRC58-62 and superior corrosion resistance compared to ordinary steel, though at a higher cost.
- High-Strength Plastic Ball Bearings: Commonly used in lightweight office chairs, made of PA66+GF30 (nylon 66 reinforced with 30% glass fiber), weighing only one-third of metal bearings. However, they should avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures (>80โ).
Precision Grade According to the international standard ISO 3290, ball bearing precision is classified into grades G5-G1000. For office chairs, it is recommended to choose G16-G28 grade, with a diameter variation of โค0.002mm to ensure smooth rotation without jamming. The precision can be initially judged by observing the uniformity of light reflection on the ball bearing surface: high-precision ball bearings reflect light in a complete circle without local dark areas.
Load-Bearing Capacity Selection should be based on the user's weight and usage scenario:
- Ordinary Office Chairs: Each ball bearing should have a load capacity of โฅ50kg (total load capacity of 250kg for 5 bearings).
- Heavy-Duty Chairs: Choose ball bearings with a load capacity of โฅ100kg each and equip them with a reinforced cage to prevent deformation.
III. Maintenance Methods
- Cleaning Cycle: It is recommended to clean them every 3 months, using a soft-bristled brush to remove hair and dust from the ball bearing tracks. Avoid using corrosive cleaners.
- Lubrication: Apply 1-2 drops of silicone-based grease (e.g., Dow Corning Molykote 33) to the ball bearing surface every 6 months, which can reduce the friction coefficient by more than 30%.
- Wear Detection: If periodic noise or sudden resistance changes occur during rotation, measure the ball bearing diameter with a micrometer. Replace immediately if the wear exceeds 5% of the original size.
Proper selection and regular maintenance can extend the service life of ball bearings to over 5 years, significantly reducing the overall maintenance cost of the chair. If the ball bearing cage is found to be broken or the ball bearings are detached, immediately stop using and replace the entire swivel mechanism to avoid safety hazards.
